Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I met the students at their home. We discussed the on-line high school they are attending and what credits they need to acquire in order to graduate. I then helped them chart work that needs to be accomplished in their English course. I counseled them in the hope of getting them caught up on some of their assignments. We worked specifically on an assignment comparing two poems, one by DH Lawrence and the other by Robert Hayden. The assignment focused on defining themes and sensory images. Together we reviewed brief bios of both writers. They did strong work in identifying sensory images and finding textual evidence. When that work was completed, we discussed two other upcoming writing assignments and brainstormed ideas. One assignment involves the history of technology and strategic thinking."
"We covered chapters 5-11 of Frankenstein and expanded upon our notes/outline from last time. We made sure to make culturally relevant connections (Mont Blanc by Percy Shelley, naming children, etc.) as well as placing some modern insights on the changing mental states of the characters (attachment disorders)."
"We spent the entire time examining essay writing and practicing essay planning for the writing portion of the ACT exam. The student could use more help with thesis writing and learning how to mesh all aspects of an essay together to create a cohesive text. We discussed topic sentence writing, transitions, and introductory and concluding paragraphs. I think in the long run this will also help him with reading comprehension; if he understands how a piece of writing works and can imagine what the writer was thinking at the time he or she wrote the text, he will have a much easier time following along and fully comprehending it."
