"Today the student and I completed her Geometry homework. She was working on the Chapter Review before the Chapter 4 test. The concepts she has down are solving simple algebraic expressions and conversion from L to mL and other metric units. She could use more practice dividing with decimals. She will also benefit from showing her work on her test tomorrow. I explained how writing something out can help us self-correct. Great job!"
"Student 1: Flashcards of Spanish vocab words on his spelling list; we went over how to say them and ones that have accents, as well as a little bit of spelling. Student 2: Some cursive practice, Spanish alphabet, simple phrases, some words in Spanish."
"The student turned in the rough draft of a term paper before break and received a grade and comments back on it. He requested help figuring out what kinds of revisions he needs to make to the paper. He went through the draft and the teacher comments and he spent some time crafting a strong thesis statement and a complete introduction to support the thesis. He also worked on crafting all his topic sentences so they focused on the main argument of the paragraph and then wrote out what he would want to make sure to focus each paragraph around. The other main thing he did was look at his sources. I helped him construct some bibliographic entries and then we had a conversation about how to cite things and where material should be cited since a main problem with his first draft was that he did not cite anything in the body of the paper. We will be meeting again before the final draft is due to go over these issues."
"For Chinese, I am tailoring the vocabulary to his software lessons. Since the computer program offers extremely useful phrases and sentences but does not provide worksheets or writing-tutorials, I am teaching the student on writing the characters and also identifying/reading them."
"Session 1: In the Skype session, we were able to go over quite a bit as the student was pretty focused. We continued our work with pronouns and finished up with vocabulary from lesson one and two. Session 2: In the in person session, she was really energetic and ready to learn, especially towards learning to write her numbers. By practicing at home, she now understands pronouns, so we were able to quickly move on from those. We spent most of our time going over conversation skills by asking and answering questions as if we just met."
"The student said he is feeling more confident on his in-class check-in quizzes. We worked on Chapter 4.1 and 4.2 material, including researching an opinion poll and vocabulary related to carrying out experiments."
"We continued working on trigonometric functions and identities. We solved identities and equations using sum, difference, and double angle formulas. The student is progressing in his understanding of trigonometric functions and was able to solve problems independently. The session went great and we will meet next Tuesday."
"Worked on spelling, typing home keys, and looked up definitions in the dictionary. This is great practice for the student to think through the order of letters of the alphabet. Even now and again, we run across deficit areas from very early on in his education, and this is one of them. However, with practice and due to his maturity, he'll catch up quickly."
"Today the student learned about the mechanisms of evolution. First, we covered the importance of genetic variation in a changing environment. Then we learned about directional selection, stabilizing selection and disruptive evolution. She went on to learn about genetic drift and the bottleneck and founder effects."
"We went over a lot more math. The student's picking up on equations much better now, and applying them to problems. She's consistently showing improvement. She has a math and science section assigned for homework."
"Test Tuesday - Reviewed Plant Chapter. 1. Mono/Eudicot structure. 2. Types of tissues. 3. Types of cells. 4. Translocation 5. Stem / Root / Leaf structures. Next Session 12/13...genetics."
"The student and I worked on the confirmation essay, along with some more vocabulary words. I assigned the student a 30-35 minute essay for him to write."
