Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We met and discussed overall goals with the student and his father as well as which texts to purchase in order to facilitate the tutoring process. We met again later in the day in the library. We focused mostly on English grammar, proper usage of tense and verb form, as well as Science passages. I really tried to show him that you can have a very limited background of the science that is discussed in the passages, as long as you understand the graphs and questions being presented. He seems to be very alert and learns quite fast. Moreover, the family is very open and are excellent communicators."
"The student and I developed a strategy for the Reading Section of the ACT. We went over the four passage types (prose, humanities, social science, and natural science). We practiced a three-step plan to attack this section by first finding the lead words in the questions, then highlighting them in the text, and finally skimming and scribbling in the margins. This creates a passage map so that the questions can be answered quickly. He was really receptive to this idea. Together, we practiced two full passage together using this strategy."
"We worked on concepts from the math section of the ACT, specifically solving for functions embedded in other functions [i.e. f(x)=g(h(x))], geometry and trigonometry concepts including Pythagorean theorem, and some strategies. We are really working on developing solid strategies and mindsets for problem solving, especially looking at a tough, complicated problems and finding the small, east steps that we can take to make it to the main solution."
