Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Tennessee, TN Trigonometry tutoring
The student worked through her homework, which mostly consisted of finding roots. The student understood concepts pretty quickly after simple explanations, and her attitude was good .We went over: formulas that should be memorized, how to graph functions, and factoring strategies. We then reviewed a past quiz. Practice means faster work, which means more time to check work. If time permits, it could be helpful to do a few extra practice problems from the back of sections. Those tend to have a few extra twists or challenges, and practicing to solve them quickly makes everything else much easier. Regarding today's topics (mostly about finding roots), I told the student it would help to at least check that the right number of roots are found each time (based on the largest power of x in the polynomial), and plug in each root into the original expression to make sure the result is zero.

The student worked very positively through the whole session. We worked on exponents, as well as properties of multiplication and addition. He worked well through exponents and multiples of ten. He continues to need a review on properties of multiplication and addition. He was left with additional cursive writing practice.

The student zipped through her math homework today with minimal errors. Even giving her practice problems, she still ran right through them without a problem. Then, we moved on to social studies, where she had to write a paper on a newspaper article. She wrote so well for her age level. It's so impressive to see how much she has improved since when I first began working with her. Keep up the good work!

The student's class is covering adding negative numbers, currently. He has a really good handle on that. I showed him a few pointers, but other than that he blazed through his homework and had no struggle with it. Since we finished the homework early, we reviewed his test on last chapter, which covered percentages, tax, discount, etc. He did well and the answers he missed were simple mistakes. There were two tricky questions due to wording, but we analyzed and went over them. It was a good session, and he has a solid grasp on this chapter so far.

The student's class is now moving away from the mathematical analysis of polynomials onto the more conceptual problems dealing with functions. These are much less math oriented and therefore less prone to simple mistakes, so I think he will do better in this session. He seemed to understand the material very readily, only needing help when identifying if y is a function of x which he seemed confident in by the end of our session. Either next session or the session after, we will go over his last test depending on when he gets it back.
