Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, we continued to discuss the student's American History final paper. He worked on the main section of the paper, using examples from the history text and Internet. I encouraged him to reread what he wrote aloud, as I feel it would help him find any errors in spelling, grammar or clarity."
"The student and I worked through a number of SAT critical reading passages and questions. We worked on understanding the main idea through chunking, summarizing, and restating in his own words. We continued to practice multiple choice elimination techniques and I asked other comprehension questions to assess his understanding. He's moving along well and said the chunking format was helpful. We'll continue to practice this way until he is comfortable with the technique and able to use it mentally on his own. His homework is to find an SAT level reading book and read 15 minutes per day while writing down any vocabulary words he doesn't know. Great session!"
"The student's literature teacher has assigned The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as their next assignment, so the student and I went through the first few chapters of the plot, as well as the characters, and the general overview of the rest of the book. We then discussed the advantages of the ACT over the SAT, as well as the possibilities of doing just a few grammar lessons in the future."
"The student demonstrates increased recall when supported with letter names. I requested that the student practice K-2 level sight words with support to verbally report letters. We will introduce multi-sensory letters at our next session to increase the accuracy of letter name recall and support recall of words with decreased support."
"The student did a great job recalling our previous lessons as we went on to Lesson 5 today. We learned the new vowel sounds "ee," "oa," and "ou," as well as the word beginnings "ex" and "en." We also added some reading to our routine. He does a very good job of understanding words in context. I think next week we'll take a little break from word parts to review the vocabulary we've been learning, and then we'll move on to Lesson 6."
"The student did a great job today. She was very focused, and our session was productive. We began by using puzzle cards to identify both long and short vowel sounds in words with picture support. She did a great job of sounding out the beginning, middle, and end sounds of each word. She is also up to 24 sight words! We rounded out our lesson with the letter U and some information on planets. We will continue to explore space and the planets in future sessions."
