"For this lesson, the student and I first focused on the writing section. We worked through an entire 2 practice sections and brainstormed about the essay, which she will write for the next lesson. She still needed help with some of the grammar concepts and has time issues with this section though she has improved a lot on the improving paragraph section. We spent the rest of the time on the reading and once she concentrated she did as well as ever."
"The student is feeling really confident about the math, English, and reading sections, so we focused on science today. Most of the questions he missed he understood right away, and we discussed how elimination can be useful and time management. We also talked about common question formats. We will continue to work on science next week."
"The student practiced brainstorming, outlining, writing, and revising for the essay portion with the prompt "If you could meet a living person, who would it be and why?" The student chose to write about the Blackhawks player Patrick Kane. The student is improving at using specific, concise details, but he still wanders off topic at times and doesn't use many transitions. I noted in the student's writing where and how he could use transitions or cut out the 'fluff'. The student also worked through a synonyms section annotating words he didn't know and providing examples once they were defined. The student is improving at using Latin and Greek roots to decode words. We also completed a portion of sentence completion, which the student has greatly improved upon by noting reference words such as "despite," "while," "not only, but also..." The student stated we will work on "tons of math" when we meet tomorrow."
