"The topic that the student is currently covering in class deals with triangles (more algebra II related questions). He has a quiz that covers sine, cosine, tangent and their inverses, how to convert degrees to radians and vice versa, and the unit circle. We went through all the online notes first. He understood sine, cosine, and tangent, and could work through problems related to this topic. He had a little difficulty with the conversion of radians to degrees, but after working through a couple of problems he could do those with no problem. The unit circle was the biggest challenge for him and is where we spent most of our time. I explained the unit circle to him and we went through how to obtain each of the pieces of information (degrees, radians, and the Cartesian coordinate points). Then we spent time working through a worksheet of problems that used the unit circle. By the end of the session he was comfortable with applying the information."
"During this session, the student and I went over more circular angle geometry involving tangents, secants, chords, and arcs. She hadn't learned some of the material in class yet, so I went through the unfamiliar topics with her, explaining the formulas and renaming the variables with words in a way that was helpful to her. She responds much more to visual learning, so we kept a handout with the different types of angles next to her homework as we went through so she could compare the angles herself and choose the correct formula to use. After doing a few examples, she was less reliant on the sheet and, for the most part, came up with the correct formulas on her own. The student is really making a lot of progress when it comes to applying strategies from outside the current lesson. She has gotten so much bolder when it comes to picking out shapes or angles that she thinks could be helpful, and is making a lot of connections that she wouldn't have made in the past."
"The student's performance on his exams from the previous week has improved. We went over circles and formulas for area and circumference. Also, we went over rules for chords and arc."
"Great session today! The student and I reviewed the difference between line segments, rays, and lines. We also learned about properties of planes. As guidance, we used his class notes and homework packets. He kept a positive attitude, and remains confident he will succeed in this Thursday 's quiz."
"On this night, we reviewed geometry and algebraic properties and proofs. As the session continued, the student grew more comfortable with the new concepts. I'm hoping that over the next few sessions we can do more practice so that she'd be more prepared for any upcoming tests and that she'll gain more confidence."
"The student and I met for the first time today. We primarily worked on problems in supplementary angles. We worked on drawing out word problems, writing equations for unknown variables, and solving. We also went over simplifying radicals as part of the Pythagorean theorem. It seems like he understands the material well and having additional practice should help solidify the concepts. I would say the biggest challenge (and a common one) is translating the written part of a word problem to a mathematical expression. This is something we will continue to focus on moving forward."
