Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has an exam tomorrow. We covered a lot of material and he was focused and he worked extremely hard. We discussed concepts and problems from chapter 1.5, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 in preparation for his exam tomorrow. These included the limit definition of the derivative, continuity, differentiability, inflection points, local maxima and minima, critical points, the chain rule, the quotient rule, concavity, lines tangent to a curve, and various algebraic manipulations for completing problems. I did not discuss grades or scores with him. I would encourage him that if he wants to do a lot of the math in his head, he can, but before proceeding, he should then write out his steps and make sure that he is not making small mistakes. We have covered a lot of material and he understands much of it. Nearly flawless performance comes from daily practice, so I am encouraging him to work more on his own outside of tutoring time."
"We covered inverse trig functions. I feel like the student made some improvement on this topic We will cover extreme values of functions in our next meeting."
"We went over chapter 2.1-2.3 and also did a lot of practice for the quiz on Monday. The student is a fast learner and she only needs a couple of examples to get the concept!"
"We went over the definition of a derivative and how to solve problems related to those questions, along with explaining what a derivative is graphically. We also went over composite functions as the student was having issue with those. Towards the end, we went over limits again and went through some examples."
"Today, we briefly discussed integration by partial fractions and completed an example using long division of polynomials. We spent the majority of the session discussing and practicing the various methods of finding the limits of functions that initially yield indeterminate forms. By the end of the session, the student had much more confidence and understood when to use each method and how to apply them."
"Today, the student and I reviewed for her test coming up on Friday. For the first half or so, we went over algebra concepts from last week to make sure she understood them thoroughly. After that, we went over the quiz she had last week after our first session. She generally seemed to understand the concepts. Once we finished reviewing the quiz and correcting her mistakes, we went over the review packet her professor supplied."
