Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

Tempe, AZ SAT Writing and Language tutoring
I can see improvement in how the student analyzes and goes about solving some of the more complex problems. He had a bit of rust in the reading section we tackled. The passage was especially dense, but he picked up on more of the subtlety after we went through it together. If nothing else, this session was useful in highlighting where I can help improve his analytical reading skills. Overall, this was a solid session with plenty to build on.

At this session, the student worked through the better part of a reading section, half a writing section, and an entire math section, during which time she gave no more than 3 or 4 incorrect answers. The only questions she needed help with were those regarding a particularly turgid passage from a treatise by John Stuart Mill, which was far and away the most difficult part of the test. She also asked several questions about correct English grammar and usage (comma use, who vs whom, etc.). We will spend time on this subject at our next session. She continues to perform exceptionally well. If her performance on practice material is any indication, she can expect a nearly perfect score on the upcoming test.

The student and I went over the writing passage she worked since our last session. She has a strong sense of grammar and what 'sounds right' in a passage, but we'll continue to hone her mastery of grammar concepts so she doesn't have to solely rely on her ear. We also continued going over her practice test from last weekend. Reviewing the math section was particularly fruitful because she realized there were several questions she should have answered correctly because she knew how to solve them. However, because she didn't write out all her work and because she was perhaps rushing, she chose incorrect answers. We will practice writing out solutions as we move forward.

Tempe, AZ SAT Writing and Language tutoring
In this session, we focused on word problems relating to rates, conversions, and percentages, areas that the student seems to need to work on. Overall, she understands the concepts. The more she works on paper and becomes comfortable with this, the more confidence she will have with the problems and the techniques. We also discussed how units can help guide her decisions on various problems. We then finished the session by working on a couple readings. Overall, she is very comfortable with reading questions, and she seemed quick to adapt to the new styles of questions we overviewed. Her reading pace and efficacy has proved to be quite good.
