Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Tempe, AZ Microbiology tutoring
In our first session, the student and I prepared our approach to studying for his final on Thursday. We plan to meet every day until Thursday in order to cover all of the material presented in this semester. We started today by reviewing stoichiometry, molarity, and gas laws. The majority of our time was spent determining that he understands how to approach solving quantitative problems in a logical manner. My biggest goal at this point in time is to make sure that he slows down and makes sure the numbers he is using are accurate. He showed me that he understands what equations to use and when, but he goes very quickly, causing him to make small errors throughout the solving process. I plan to emphasize this point during our remaining sessions so that he is as accurate as possible on his final. We will meet tomorrow and review titrations and acid/base chemistry.

Today the student and I continued to work on his biology study guide for finals. This took most of our session time but he said that the information from the beginning of the semester was beginning to come back to him which was a great sign! After completing the biology study guide, he and I began to study for his Spanish test on Monday. He seemed to have difficulty with remembering what the verbs meant in English along with what some of the vocabulary words meant. He was able to get a general concept of questions asked in Spanish but sometimes missed key parts of the question. I sent him two worksheets last week as an extra resource to prepare for his test and focus on the vocab issues, and sent the answers today so that he will be able to check his work.

Concepts we covered included: scalar quantities, mechanics (calculating distance given initial velocity and acceleration) , components of vectors, calculate time of fall given distance above earth, action and reaction, gravitation field strength and acceleration due to gravity, impulse and momentum, distance traveled given initial velocity and acceleration, magnetic and electric fields, calculating electrostatic force, calculating work given voltage and charge, calculating electrostatic force given charge and field strength, mass and inertia, resistance and cross sectional area, transverse and longitudinal waves, frequency and period, calculating energy stored in a spring, calculating charge given amperage and time, calculating frequency of a wave given speed and wavelength, speed of electromagnetic waves in a vacuum, Doppler effect, superposition of waves, calculations with particles from the standard model and calculating energy given mass. The student struggled with seeing the relationship of questions to information given in reference tables but after a while showed an understanding of how to use the reference tables. We decided to complete a previous year's physics exam for extra practice. The student worked exceedingly hard to understand the material and came away with an awareness of how relatively simple equations are applied to physics problems,

Today we started the session by configuring a finals schedule. We will be meeting more frequently in the coming weeks and touching base at each session to make sure the student is incorporating the year's material in her review. Next we went over her last quiz and did corrections. The first page, where she lost most of her points, she was able to correct entirely on her own after a little more review of the material. The points she had lost on the final page were namely due to a misread in the first problem. Overall, her score would have been dramatically improved with a little more pre-test review and more careful reading of the questions. As always, when we prepare for this test we will focus on actually understanding concepts, and more essentially in carefully reading test questions to avoid making simple errors.

Today we worked on limiting reagents. He's doing quite well in his chemistry class and is understanding the material very well.

Today, we discussed different adaptations in nature. We looked a both animal adaptions (hooves, big ears, sharp teeth) and plant adaptions (deep roots, waxy leaves, thorns). The student then read a story about hibernation and different levels of hibernation. He really liked the part about the Wood Frog who freezes in the winter. A big win today was him remembering photosynthesis all by himself and that plants need sunlight to go through it.
