Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Tempe, AZ ISEE tutoring
Today I worked with the student again on his test prep. He seemed to do a lot better with some concepts that he struggled a bit with in the past - including negative numbers and exponents - so I'm pleased with that progress. I spent the first half hour helping him with his physics homework, which was a nice surprise! It was pretty advanced for someone in 8th grade so I was impressed that he followed my explanation of the problem and was able to do most of the calculations himself and then explain it back to me. After that we started working through some of the tougher math concepts in his review book and we did some practice questions. Finally, we continued building his vocabulary by expanding our words list and working through a few synonyms questions. I'm really happy with his progress and we will dive more into reading comprehension and quantitative comparisons next week.

Reviewed most of the homework questions which I had given the student last session to work on. He did a satisfactory job on the reading passages but had some problems on the mathematical sections. Therefore, we spent a much larger amount of time reviewing the problems and the theories and concepts behind them. Topics included, simplifying radicals, factoring, slopes, geometric formulas, percentages and proportions. I did leave the student with several pages of homework.

The student and I went over the basic structure of the test, talking about the sections, how many questions, the timing, and the types of questions. We then looked at examples of each type of question and I began to introduce some strategies for answering them. Going forward, she and I will address each section in a more focused manner, making sure she is comfortable with answering all sorts of questions and with test taking strategies. She instinctively answers questions logically, and eliminates answer choices that do not make sense. Her educational background and test taking skills are on track, and we will do focused work to cater her skills to this test. For our session on Monday, I've asked her to complete two short diagnostic tests focused on verbal and quantitative reasoning.

The student took the second half of a mathematics achievement section and got about 25 percent of the questions correct. As we worked through each problem together, he quickly became comfortable with the material and got the questions correct on his own afterward. He reported that the second half of the test was easier than the first half. However, since he had about the same accuracy in both sections, I think this is a reflection of his confidence level. As long as he keeps a positive mental attitude and is able to remember and apply what we cover, he should be in much better shape by January.

The student and I spent a good deal of time looking at the work he had put in on his essay. We jumped into things by just doing basic proofreading work, checking grammar and usage. But the conversation turned to other topics like structure, specifically at the paragraph level but also in the essay as a whole. He seemed to see ways to improve, and while we edited it he made some really good changes. I think this was a productive session.

During today's session, the student and I reviewed the article she had highlighted for homework. She had done a good job of selecting the most important details. Together we took these highlighted notes and wrote a solid summary paragraph of the article. We spent the majority of the session working on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers.
