How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

They may be excited about the prospect of applying to a competitive private high school, but your child may be unsure how to study for the High School Placement Test, or HSPT. The exam is administered by individual schools, so there's no nationally standardized scoring. As if standardized testing isn't challenging enough! Varsity Tutors' educational directors in Tempe, AZ, can find a tutor for your child, who can work with their learning style and abilities, to help them do well on the HSPT. One-on-one help can avoid the common pitfalls of test prep courses, and focuses on your child's individual needs. In fact, an experienced HSPT tutor in Tempe, AZ, can present your student with multiple teaching approaches until they find the one that works best for them.

Working on your child's level is important to learning. It also prepares them for this difficult test, and the challenges that lie ahead. To start, the exam has nearly 300 questions. Your child has 2.5 hours, which seems like ample time, but it comes down to a limited amount of time per question. To succeed, they cannot stumble on the format or the content. A tutor can therefore incorporate grammar, spelling, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and reading exercises into the study plan. Practice tests help your child understand the format and time their performance. These also make it easier for the tutor to track progress and adapt their strategy if needed.

Tempe, AZ HSPT tutoring
The student and I worked on blitz math, trying to do the math section as quickly and accurately as possible. We hardly hit any road bumps, and she's been improving quite well in the math section. She has a sort of "meta" view of the test (as she's particularly sensitive to which question she's on and the appropriate difficulty of that question), but we worked on taking the test 1 problem at a time. She's improved dramatically in her geometry, but I suppose a lot of that was just shaking off the cobwebs. She also has improved in her function analysis and critical thinking for math sections, which is excellent news!

The student and I continued to try to prepare him for the math section of the SAT. He had managed to fit in a section on his own time so we tackled the problems that gave him trouble together. After that, we began to cover Algebra 1 topics which include topics such as exponents, roots, factoring, and basic algebra. He had a bit of trouble with the more complicated, tricky problems so I did my best to set him straight. I think he needs to spend a bit more time preparing on his own if he wants to be successful. I will send him copies of the pages I'm using so that he can review them and try some problems on his own.

The student got around 650/section for reading and writing on his practice test. If he gets around 10 on his essay he should be able to achieve a 700 on his writing section. We started working on the reading section. He was very focused and motivated.

The student is doing very well. She took another practice test where her scores were 780 for Math, the essay was a 10, the Writing section altogether was a 610, and the Critical Reading was a 620. The problem areas remain Vocabulary (a total of 11 wrong, while the Reading had 5 wrong), and Improving Sentences in the Writing section where she had 6 wrong out of a total of 11 wrong. She has given herself enough time to significantly improve her scores since she takes the SAT in May. She is disciplined, learns quickly, and is motivated. I can easily see her achieving scores in the 700s for both Writing and Reading--frankly, if she continues to do the work, she has nothing holding her back from any score she would like to achieve.

He took a practice English test, then we went over the questions he missed. We talked about answering the question instead of trying to improve the passage, and about picking the most direct answer. We'll need to work on comma rules, and matching number and tense.

Today we went through the first practice test that I sent the student. She scored 33 right, which curves to a 520 according to the curve for that test. We went through the answers for all of the other problems and the reasoning behind them. She was very attentive and did very well today. I gave her test 2 for Wednesday.
