Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

Tacoma, WA SAT Writing and Language tutoring
We worked primarily on the SAT math section and went over the student's errors on recent diagnostic tests. We went over a number of problems, which the student seemed much more confident in solving during his second try. In many instances, it seems that the only reason he answered them incorrectly was because he was rushing himself. In some cases, I suggested the student solve the problems in fewer steps. It was great to see that the student understood these suggestions and seemed willing and ready to use them on the SAT. We also went over some grammar rules, particularly those regarding pronouns and pronoun reference. The student seems to be on the right track towards doing well on the SAT!

The student said that she would like to discuss math. I reviewed the math concepts on the SAT, discussed strategies, and went over practice math questions. We also reviewed some of the sentence completions and reading comprehension questions and passage questions. After the session, she emailed to let me know that she and her father had decided to just do reading comprehension from this point on.

Today was our last session. We reflected on the student's growth throughout the past month, and what her concerns and strengths are going into the test this Saturday. We created a little pep talk/quick reminders to review before test day, and then did some timed practice in all three sections, with a focus on math. I think we both know she is ready to crush it on Saturday, and that her hard work will pay off! It's been a pleasure working with her.

We decided that the student will take the new, revised SAT in the spring, giving him adequate time to prepare. Therefore I will find all the materials I can that are geared specifically to the new test. Then we worked part way through exercises (designed based on the current SAT) on improving sentences and basic algebra, which he will complete at home. He also identified some math areas of concern: powers/exponents, polynomials, factorable quadratic equations, translating English into math, direct/indirect variation, and domain and range of functions. We will focus attention on these topics in the near future.

The student and I continued our focus on the writing and critical reading portions of the SAT. In the writing, we focused a majority of our time on subject-verb agreement, as it is one of the major concepts in this section. We also looked at strategies for the rewriting sentences portion. He is showing signs of improvement on these sections. He is getting better at noticing what the SAT is asking him. On the critical reading we looked at vocabulary, and what to do when you don't know the vocabulary in the answer choices.

We covered SAT grammar rules and practiced some of the brainstorming aspects of the essay process. The student did very well on these portions and we moved on to discuss a few reading passages from the critical reading section.
