How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

For many students headed toward their finish in high school, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, is the most challenging academic experience they'll face. To score well, you'll need to perfect your reading, writing, and math skills. It's not just about knowing facts or having academic skills, however. The SAT requires you to be able to call on information and cognitive skills over a three-hour period; 50 minutes more if the essay portion is included. Preparing for this exam can be challenging and time-consuming. Varsity Tutors' educational directors will connect you with an SAT tutor in Tacoma, WA, after considering all of your specific goals and needs. Your personal, independent instructor will do whatever it takes to maximize your chances of scoring close to a 1600.

The SAT has changed in recent years. It includes not just writing and language, but also subjects such as social studies and history, which are integrated into the writing and analytical components of the test. You'll have to brush up on everything you've learned about algebra, problem solving, linear equations, and more. Post-secondary institutions weigh on your score heavily, as they see it as a direct indicator of college readiness. Your SAT score, therefore, is a critical part of your college application. Whatever your needs, Varsity Tutors can help you find a skilled, independent tutor near Tacoma, who can guide you on the path toward SAT understanding.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

Tacoma, WA SAT tutoring
The student and I continued to work on writing, as it is all relatively uncomfortable for her still. We went through identification of adjectives and adverbs as well as idiomatic usages for certain words (disagreement WITH as opposed to disagreement TO, for example). We went over several high level writing questions in an attempt to show her the spectrum of difficulty in the writing section. We then went over sentence correction, but she proved to be very good at those; her main difficulties lie in the single word or single phrase error sections, as she gets caught up on whether or not there are too many E (fine as is) answers or if there are too few. We also worked exponentially on speed in the writing section, as we divided her time up to tackle the writing sections piece by piece so she has a concept of pacing.

We ran through several practice SAT sections of each subject. He was strong in reading and only erred more in the more difficult writing/math questions. He understands all of the concepts, but sometimes rushes through a question or misreads a key modifying phrase. With review of all the grammatical concepts and math topics, he should be well-equipped for Saturday's test.

The student and I spent his last session gearing him up for the Critical Reading and Writing portions that will appear on the SAT. We started by quizzing him on some of the vocabulary flash cards he had made. I told him that one way I use to memorize some of the more difficult words is to create a picture in my head that associates the word itself along with its definition. We then went through more practice questions for grammar, and I taught him how to correctly form some of the word phrases that we saw there. The last thing we did was go over some reading passage questions.

The student wrote a good essay (somewhere in the 4-5 range) for his last assignment. I began today's session by evaluating it and showing him how he could improve his work by addressing the prompt more thoroughly. One of my goals with him, as with other SAT students, is to show him to analyze the language of an essay prompt so that he can draw out the all the subtlety of his thoughts on the issue. Afterward we tackled a couple of very difficult math problems, then moved into some heavy-duty critical reading work on two especially difficult passages. That took most of the session because the questions pertaining to said passages require more rigorous analysis than the student is accustomed to performing. I instructed him to take a full-length practice test so that we can assess his progress so far.

The student has not taken the SAT yet, but she has taken the PSAT. She said Reading is an area of concern, so today we focused on that. We did a reading section together, practicing techniques and discussing process of elimination. Then, she did a timed section herself. She missed 3 of 14 questions. We discussed the questions she missed.
