How can a GRE tutor help you?

During graduate school admissions, you will be required to take the General Record Exam, or the GRE. The exam is designed to assess your capabilities and how you may perform in a graduate program. Some programs may require you to take the corresponding GRE Subject Test, though this is not always required. The test is timed for three hours and 45 minutes. There are six sections divided among three core components: analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning. There is an additional experimental section that doesn't count in the score and is simply used to test future GRE questions. The GRE covers a broad expanse of content from high school-level material to college material. Don't walk into the exam without preparing for it. It sounds like the student did well on his history exam, though we won't know for sure until he gets his grade. He said the only thing he didn't know was something that wasn't in his packet and we therefore didn't study. Today we began on the 7th grade math assessment packet. I'm really proud of the student and his progress: he's flying through most of the problems and a lot of it is stuff he'd struggled with before. We'll continue working on this on Thursday, and also keep up with his in-class lessons. He's learning how to write a function from a set of numbers.

Tacoma, WA GRE tutoring
My second GRE tutoring session with this student went well. We started our session by reviewing the exercises in the Math review of the guide to the GRE. She understood most of the information and the questions in each of the sections. She had challenges with functions, solving quadratic equations by factoring, percentages, similar triangles, probability, and the means and medians of large sets of numbers. As we worked through each problem, she gained a better understanding of the concepts presented and how to find the solutions. I encouraged her to acknowledge her skill at the easy and medium questions and recognize that she will get better at the hard questions over time with more practice. For our next tutoring session, she will work through the remaining problems in the quantitative reasoning practice questions chapter of the GRE guide. She will also complete the first practice test on the GRE guide CD.
