Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Syracuse University, NY Calculus tutoring
We reviewed for the student's Chapter 3 test by going over problems from that chapter in the book including "equivalent expressions" (for example, (x+3)(x+3)-4; or (a^2)^3). We reviewed how to complete the square in order to find the center of a circle and to find the equation of that circle. We discussed that pi represents the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of any circle. We also reviewed compound interest problems where we had to find the annualized compound interest. It seems she is not being taught the information in the classroom. We will continue to work on this next session.

We reviewed for the student's exam. His exam covers topics on nonhomogeneous heat equations, homogeneous wave equations, and the Fourier series. He came with questions, which were answered. We covered Green's formula, some complex analysis, solving homogeneous heat equations, and touched upon the wave equation.

We reviewed for the student's math test coming up. We went over finding the inverse of functions; this includes functions with logarithms. We went over how to convert logarithms to exponential functions. We also did a few word problems about exponential decay and growth. She feels much more prepared for her test now.

We reviewed for the student's semester exam, including exponent rules, exponential functions, absolute value equations and inequalities, and graphing polynomial functions. The student struggled most with exponent properties. He needs to cycle his practice throughout the semester. He is creating a note card for his exam that will help review all of the topics covered. I am concerned that he is not retaining the lessons we covered earlier in our sessions and wonder if he was memorizing steps rather than learning concepts. We will work on that in the future sessions.

We reviewed for the student's test on linear functions. We started by going over her review packet that she didn't feel comfortable with, due to not having practiced the material in over a week. Once I re-explained each concept she struggled with, I had her practice an example of each. She also incorporated a few techniques that would help her memorize each lesson. We mainly focused on the three types of linear equations and direct variation. She also had a hard time with negative signs, which she understood would be a costly error if she continues to do that on her test. By the end of the session, she felt much more confident about the material, and ready to do well on her test.
