The student and I spent half our time practicing essay outlines for sample prompts. I reviewed expectations, strategy, and timing. He will continue to practice independently and send me copies of any essays he writes for feedback. We also worked on long reading passage comprehension, vocabulary strategy, and grammar rules from the practice test. I gave him last minute advice on preparing for the test and left him some links for additional practice. Best of luck to him on test day!

Today, we first talked about what the student has been getting on her past SAT exams and what her goal is, and what her aspiring colleges are. We then discussed different parts of the SAT test and what she found most challenging. Then, we reviewed the SAT Critical Reading section, starting with the sentence completion. We discussed test-taking strategies, and I told her that she needs to write down and memorize every vocabulary word that she does not know. We then went over and discussed strategies for passage-based reading questions. I told her about different question types and what to look out for when reading the passage. I also left her with some homework to do for our next lesson on Saturday. Overall, she did a good job.

The student worked on a section from a previous year's test, addressing sentence improvement and we went over the answers. She's already showing marked improvement in detecting grammar and mechanics errors such as recognizing the difference between dependent and independent clauses and improving word choices/clearer phrasings. She then wrote a timed 25 minute practice essay which will be graded and discussed in detail next session. We also discussed the criteria and process for grading the essays and the differentiation between 1-6 level essays. The goal is to have a well organized, muiti-paragraph response with well developed discussion of evidence to support main points. The rest of the session was spent working on practice math problems which illuminated some concepts and strategies to review next session. These include using ratios, factoring, and triangle formulas to approach problems vs. getting bogged down with longer computations. Most of the questions don't require use of a calculator. She was extremely diligent and scored a big win with her improvement with the writing skills questions!

The students and I went over high-yield math topics. We covered arcs and tangents, prime numbers, ratios and direction variation, inequalities, and combinations and permutations. They understand the concepts and the equations, and with a little homework they should do fine. I will be assigning diagnostic tests to isolate any particular areas of conceptual weakness that I may need to address. We also addressed test-taking strategies for the math section. They are great at explaining concepts to each other, which improves the efficiency of sessions.

Today the student and I focused on critical reading and math. For critical reading I asked him to read excerpts from newspaper articles, keeping in mind the same sort of things that he should when reading an SAT passage- what is the purpose of the writing and how does the author going about making his or her point? How does a certain word or literary device add to the meaning of a sentence or paragraph? My goal here was to help him realize that reading these critical reading passages is the same as reading anything else. You should approach any piece of writing with an engaged and questioning mind in order to interpret the meaning correctly. He did well with this! We then did some sentence completion problems, again practicing finding context clues and eliminating at least 1 answer choice before guessing. We got the chance to learn several new words, so he now has a really good bank of SAT words. We then did some math problems. We talked about the use of "of" and "is" in a word problem- "of" tells you that you are multiplying, and "is" signifies where to place the equals sign. We also talked about plugging in your own numbers for tough math problems. For example, if a question says "a and b are odd integers" then asks you to figure out which combinations of a and b will also be odd, pick two, easy to work with odd numbers for a and b and figure it out that way! For extra work I gave him some f(x) problems to do because he has a little trouble recognizing that f(x) doesn't mean "f times x," rather it means "a function in terms of the variable x." We will have our last session next week, then it's test time! He is strong on writing so we didn't do any practice with that today but will review a bit next week.
