The student and I covered IHD number of unsaturations in all possible variations, why is it important for IR spectroscopy, examples, hydrogenation, heat of hydrogenation and ranking double bonds based on stability, about thermo and kinetic products, types of isomers in a table, r/s tips and tricks, chiral centers and internal mirror planes and meso, and how will it relate to future material.

For this session, we covered the following topics: chirality, racemic mixtures of Sn1 products, and E1/E2 reactions. The student had the most difficult time with chirality, largely due to the fact that it involves a heavy amount of mental manipulation of the molecules; that is something many students struggle with. To counter this, we used her molecule kit to have a visual representation of what practice problems we were doing, and I believe this is one of the factors that greatly helped her understand the concept. Because she was previously exposed to Sn1/Sn2 reactions in her chemical thinking course, she grasped E1/E2 reactions without difficulties. Likewise, that background also helped her understand the concept of racemization in Sn1 reactions.

Today we went over the student's lab material, covering separation of enantiomers and determining enantiomeric excess. We discussed the objectives of the experiment, what each step in the procedure accomplished, interpreting the results and discussing possible errors and improvements for future experiments. Overall she did very well in her lab report. Great job!

Today we continued our talk about the reactions with ketones. We covered the reactions with the LDA and stereochemistry that entails the use of the this reagent, kinetic versus thermodynamic product. We covered the reactions of amines acting as a Michael donor. Lastly, we had enough time to talk about cuprates alkylation using alkyl halides. To top all of this chemistry off, we discussed decarboxylation of carboxylic acids with two moieties of acid. The student is responding well to the presentation of the material, and my corny sense of humor.

We prepared for the student's upcoming test. It was more of what we had done previously, mostly substitution mechanisms. The key is understanding the balancing act among several competing factors (e.g. electron density, and sterics). Reviewing all of the functional groups will also be helpful.

The student and I had a great session. She had a worksheet from her teacher going over addition reactions to alkenes. We were able to make it through the entire worksheet, and she was feeling much better about the material. The biggest thing we talked about was about how to keep track of stereoisomers during a reaction.
