We had to finalize the student's schedule for the semester. We had a conversation with her mom as well, and figured out a schedule that would work for her and also stay somewhat within her interests. She did end up dropping environmental sociology, and we replaced it with an art history class. We also went through the syllabi for all her classes, the requirements and due dates. She really wants to have a very successful semester so we need to really stay on top of all her due dates. There was also an assignment for philosophy 110, plus a video to watch that there will be a quiz on.

The client has to take a test tomorrow on writing an expository essay for the state assessment. She is in pre-AP English, in 9th grade. We carefully examined the criteria listed on the state assessment website. We then practiced writing two essays and created a system for writing an essay that will earn a 4 (the highest mark). We concentrated on the steps of writing a strong thesis statement, creating details that are evidence and support the thesis, and writing in a way that is organized and utilizes good grammar and spelling.

This week we worked on the concept of comparing and contrasting. Also we worked on using a T chart and Venn diagram. The different parts of a compare and contrast essay were discussed as well. We went over different comparing and contrasting words that will help the student write her essay. She planned her compare-contrast essay with a T chart and a Venn diagram. Before our next session she is going to write the rough draft of her compare-contrast essay. We will proofread it next week and work on the final draft.

For this session I worked with the student on an advertisement for his English course. We started our work outlining ideas and brainstorming the content he would like to base his advert on. From our previous work with outlines and brainstorming techniques, it is good to see him condensing and expressing his ideas in an effective manner. He has always shown that he is full of ideas and has no problem coming up with creative content; however, he now seems to have improved his ability to direct his ideas towards answering the questions of the given task. We worked on developing the advertisement, and this is where I helped him approach the assignment with marketing motives. I helped him understand the use and effectiveness of simplicity and buzzwords to grab attention, as opposed to lengthy sentences or over-saturated material that could distract from a product's strengths.
