Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Syracuse, NY Essay Editing tutoring
Student 1: At today's session, he brought me the article he had read for this past week, which commented on video games and anger issues. He is an avid video game fan and player, and I asked him what his thoughts were on the article. He stated that he thought the article was right in certain circumstances, but that it was mostly untrue. It was great to get him talking about something that interested him. We worked on comma rules, played a game with synonyms, worked on hard to spell words, and discussed how his narrative essay is coming along in his class. (He said he has finished his rough draft.) Next week, I will probably print out some worksheets that are specific to his areas he needs to improve upon. Student 2: He impressed me this week with the synonym and antonym game we played--he came up with some great words! He and I also did a reading comprehension activity. He always answers all the questions correctly. I asked him how he did it, and he said that he re-reads passages twice--which is an excellent method. He had a little trouble this week, however, with spelling certain longer words when we did our spelling activity. We went over/reviewed those words. I will likely find one or more activities for him for next week that target his areas that he feels the least confident in.

On Wednesday This student and I met each other for the first time to work on his English 101 paper. It was a reflection essay on a specific event - in this case, a New Orleans Saints vs. Arizona Cardinals game. He needed to provide specific details and information about the experiences, using all the senses. He also needed to find a unifying theme that would give the experience some deeper meaning. He decided to go with how the New Orleans team really gave them a unifying sense after Hurricane Katrina. He talked to several of the away team fans, and also integrated several quotes from outside sources. His paper was a decent start, but his introduction and conclusion needed significant work on properly introducing the topic and wrapping it up at the end. He needs help with transitions, sentence flow and staying focused on the topic. We also had to go through and add in another 3/4 of a page of discussion and discuss how he is going to answer the questions that are needed in addition to the final paper. He will finish this draft and we will look at it in our next session.

The student reviewed his missed vocabulary words from the last session and did very well. He also took a practice test from the assessment exam book and made flashcards for any missed vocabulary to study for the next session. We also began reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as an independent reading book. I will put together some important reading comprehension and vocabulary for him to work on starting with the next session so that he can fully uncover the important themes of the book. He is reading this at the same time as his assignments for English class in school, so the amount of reading he does between sessions is flexible.

We discussed "The Pearl" and the student's short answer questions related to the movie version that he watched for his American Literature class. He is going to work on answering some of these questions based on what we talked about, and then we will meet again over the weekend to review his work for grammar, etc.

We started off the lesson with a series of practice questions from a prior 4th grade ELA test. The student performed very well; next time we will advance to the harder sections. We then constructed a story centered on a person, prop, and setting. By brainstorming we could make an interesting narrative that he could use as a guideline for future writing assignments. Lastly, we read an article in a kids sports magazine about a skier with an animal-saving foundation; I crafted questions around the content that resembled the types of questions for an ELA test. Next week he is to have two paragraphs written about a favorite chapter or moment in his after-school reading.
