Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed the writing portion of the ACT and went over some tips, included a sheet I emailed, that should help him use as much time as possible actually writing the essay the next time he takes the test."
"? Discussed reading comprehension/interpretation of readings. ? Discussed public speaking and how to most effectively get your message across to an adverse audience, as well as an audience who is on the same side of the issue as the speaker. "
"Today we worked on deciding unknown vocabulary words. We discussed prefixes and root words he may recognize. He worked on synonym sections in his book. We then worked on grammar rules and what to watch out for. He did quite well on the worksheets. Reviewed proportions, decimals, and fractions. "
"Today we worked on oral reading fluency, reading comprehension and place value (ones, tens, hundreds). We also worked on sight word recognition, and the student was able to speak a sentence using each word given."
"The student and I met for the first time to assess her current performance on the test. I had her complete a practice test to get a baseline for her performance. These results will be used to schedule our tutoring objectives for the next 6 weeks. While she was testing, I also spoke with her parents to learn more about their goals and situation to set expectations for future tutoring sessions."
"We worked through most of the review packet that the student was given to complete over break. She had planned to try all of the problems before seeing me, but because she wasn't confident on the earlier material from class, she decided to work through them with me."
"The student and I reviewed her two essays that she focused on for homework and also took a special look at the reading comprehension sections. Her mother also requested that I help her proofread her essay that will accompany the school application, so we worked on that extensively. The student continues to progress rapidly and will write two more essays this week while continuing to study vocabulary for the test."
"Carbohydrate metabolism - glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and electron transport chain, Photosynthesis, and Lac-operons. Student was able to explain all of the processes back to me by the end of the session."
"We worked through sections of a practice SAT together, focusing on math, but also touching on reading and grammar. In math we practiced time-saving strategies for the easier questions, and also looked at how to approach harder questions in a step-by-step fashion. In reading, we continued to stress the importance of identifying the author's point of view. And in grammar, we examined some of the rules the SAT tests less frequently."
"The student and I went over another verbal section that she completed. We went over what questions she missed and discussed how she felt about her overall strategy. We also discussed some strategies on how to interpret extremely difficult paragraphs in passages to ensure that she is at least understanding the main idea of the paragraph. We then completed a passage on political theory and another passage. She was able to do fairly well on both of these passages."
"The student is showing an exceptional ability to solve mathematical problems. I discussed upgrading from a 2nd grade to 3rd grade exercise book with his mother and she agreed. Today we worked on complex addition/subtraction and I introduced the concepts of "carrying" and "borrowing", which he took to with ease. While I plan to help him advance in math, I do set aside time each session to work on problems which are typical of children his age, such as writing numerals properly."
"I took an inventory of the student's knowledge of upper and lowercase letters and their sounds. The student knows all his upper and lowercase letter and short vowel sounds though he cannot identify which letters are vowels or their long sounds. He understands words that are the same and different, but he struggles in the areas of words that rhyme, beginning and ending sounds, blending, and deletion. We worked on a homophones test his teacher sent and read a few pages a book. I suggested the student read with someone each night."
