Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student brought in geometry work that she believed she needed to work on and we dedicated the entire hour to geometry (chapters 1-3 from the previous year). It seems that she just has trouble remembering terms, theorems, postulates, and other definitions. Once we review these, she has little trouble solving the problems."
"Worked on a lot of vocab and a little math with Student A, and did a bunch of riddles. Worked on vocab with Student B and went over some math and reading problems in the test."
"The student had a test on Thursday, the day after the session. She had a sheet of topics on the test, so we spent the entire session with me writing practice problems and her working on them. We were able to pretty easily identify problem areas and correct them. "
"The student received his book, and we proceeded to review the structure and outline of the test. We also began to go through the synonym sample questions one by one, word by word. We compiled a word list comprised of words with which the student is unfamiliar. For homework, he agreed to look up and write down the definition of each word. He also agreed to create a sentence with each word. We will go over his definitions and sentences during our next meeting. Our goal is to increase his vocabulary to a level that will gain him a greater score on the test."
"Today we looked at the student's homework assignment. While discussing the questions, we covered equations of a line, fractions, solving systems of equations and proofs involving triangle congruence theorems."
"We refined some of the techniques for the Reading section, and he did a much better job on the passage we went through to try out the new methods. Then we covered all of the rules of English that are tested. We got through quite a bit of information, and we'll see how he puts it to use with the practice sections he has for homework."
"Tonight the student and I worked on her math homework. It focused on interpreting bar graphs, identifying different polygons, and perimeter. We then worked on some of her reading homework and went over quizzes from the previous week."
"The student had an exam the next day, so we went through all the practice exam problems. I explained to him the ones he did not understand, and I made sure he had his formulas memorized (slope, quadratic formula, and y-intercept)."
"For this session, we continued with rounding in Math. We also finished up week two of Health, and answered reading response questions for "James and the Giant Peach". We started discussing force in Science."
"During this session, I helped the student finish the homework I assigned last Monday. We also reviewed some of the sentences I told him to write applying the colon and semicolon rules. As for homework, the student needs to finish the previous assignments as well as new ones."
"Today, the student and I reviewed for his biology exam this upcoming week. We used two homework assignments and a practice quiz to review the physical and biological properties of lipids, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Additionally, we completed a lab on Vitamin C that he had missed. He also had a geometry exam today and will report next week how he did, though he thinks he did well."
"The student and I worked primarily on spelling for this session. She has some difficulty distinguishing between homonyms, so we worked a number of worksheets, which included activities like identifying homophones, multiple choice, matching, and correcting a paragraph. We also played a few computer spelling games that also focused on homophones. Her grasp of the specific words seemed to improve as we went. Besides spelling, we chose a book for next session (C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe), which she will begin reading this week in preparation for the discussion next week."
