Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student had spelling words to work on. He completed a worksheet that consisted of finding antonyms for 5 words, finding prefixes and suffixes, and handwriting practice. Next, he wanted to practice on multiplying fractions with whole numbers. We used the dry erase board and practiced several problems. We also worked on comparing fractions and reducing fractions into lowest terms."
"The student and I studied for her upcoming biology test on animal reproduction. We reviewed everything she needed to know about gametes becoming zygotes, zygotes becoming embryos, embryos becoming fetuses, and how the process works in both internal and external fertilization. She had a lot of great questions about genetics that I hope she will discuss in class as well as with me, because I'm sure her classmates will be equally interested in the answers!"
"We mostly practiced his multiplication tables. The student is doing great in all his classes, he has improved significantly."
"The student and I first reviewed the creative resume for his first-choice university. We reformulated some of the bullet points in order to make them into more of a resume format and less narrative. We then reviewed two other applications. He is improving his writing and using more active verb forms. He is also catching his grammar errors more quickly. I advised him to use a thesaurus and think about word choice, because his biggest writing impediment is vocabulary."
"The student and I had a wonderful session regarding her college application essays! I had her tell me a little bit about herself and the school she was applying to before tackling the essay. I then had her read the essay out loud so she could hear how it sounded, and I could get a sense for where there were issues in the flow or wording. She had a longer essay than the prompt required, and her main goal was to cut it down and polish it to a finished piece. We worked on keeping the tense consistent, using interesting and varied wording, not using too casual of a tone, fixing run-on sentences, and making sure her point was clear throughout. Her attitude was ideal, she seemed to care a lot about her work and sincerely wanted to improve. She took constructive criticism well and was a joy to work with. She is going to bring the new version of her essay that she and I worked on together, along with her previous draft, to her guidance counselor at school tomorrow."
"The student and I have been working on fine tuning his early decision college essay, and we agreed to have a final review of his last draft and wrap things up. Last week, he was instructed to share the piece with his dad for some more tech insights, do a final edit for any errors, and come up with a title. At our session, he had completed almost all the tasks, and needs to now decide on a final title for his essay. We also discussed strategies to help him complete the application online. He will work on gathering all the information he needs and writing them down longhand before completing it all on the online form. He has done a terrific job of pulling together a great essay for the first college of his choice, and I wish him much success for the future!"
