Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first meeting with the student and it went very well. We were able to move very quickly through the basics of study design and graphing data. It's going to be a very fast-paced class and the student wants to meet often going forward, but he's a bright kid and I think he'll do really well."
"Today the student and I continued discussing her research questions and how she can answer them with statistics. We worked on making her questions slightly more specific to give her more detailed results that lend themselves better to interpretation. She is doing well with the concepts we've been discussing and seems to look forward to what she can find out through her project."
"Today we first reviewed linear regression and correlation and what the difference is in several scatter plots with different correlation values (-1 to +1). We then went on to look at non-linear data and practiced all the regression formulas in the TI-83. Not all data is linear, so the student is familiar with how to use different regression formulas. We then moved to a probability problem using a simulation to see if the number of heads (3) out of 10 was unusual when tossing a fair coin. We came up with P = 0.2 with our simulation as compared to a theoretical value of P = 0.17. Next week I will test the student on Calculus up to standard differentiation (limits, methods of differentiation, optimization, related rates)."
"The student and I went over topics such as factoring, solving quadratic equations, as well as using the quadratic formula directly. She has a good intuition and picked things up rather quickly."
"The student learned about rate of change and how to apply that to slope and tables and graphs in today's math homework. We went over definitions and formula, and I cautioned him about common mistakes when computing rate of change and slope. He is doing pretty well in math so far!"
"I took this session to teach the student about logarithms and their relationships to exponential functions. I gave her some problems to do before I meet her again on Thursday."
