Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session we returned back to reading Lord of the Flies with a focus on comparing and contrasting characters. The student still struggles with knowing some of the more advanced vocabulary, but is making progress to figure out what the words mean. He was asking good questions of the text, which shows his critical thinking skills are improving. We began writing an argumentative essay about 2 of the main characters in the text. I went over the basic structure. We will continue diving into this (especially as it relates to formulating details to support one's opinion)."
"The student and I began to create his study guide for next week's midterm exam on The Odyssey. He had already begun to cobble together definitions from the glossary, and I helped to keep him focused and connect those characters and locations to the plot points and thematic elements in which they're relevant. We're about halfway done with that assignment, and will resume during our next session, in which I'll instruct him to supplement his responses with a key quotation per item, so that he has them familiar/on the tip of his tongue for the exam."
"We reviewed analogies, and he completed the assignment I had given him with 96% accuracy. I asked him comprehension questions from Chapter 2 of "Night." I had printed pictures about the novel, and we discussed them and covered the historical fiction aspect of the book. We continued by reading Chapter 3 out loud, discussing characters, the setting, and the theme. We identified quotes and characters and talked about their importance to the novel, and the theme of "survival of the fittest." The session ended as he completed homework for his English/language arts class, which included vocabulary from the novel he is reading in class, "Speak.""
