Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Sunrise Manor, NV Trigonometry tutoring
We covered algebraic word problems, probability word problems, and solving multi-step algebraic expressions. The student had to be reminded of PEMDAS, but then after solved all the algebraic problems with ease. Many techniques were gone over in interpreting word problems in preparation for the GMAT. It was a productive day.

The student and I covered multiplication problem solving methods and the multiples of three. She more or less has multiples of 3 up to 3x13 down, and seems to have a good grasp of different ways to handle multiplication problems when she doesn't know the answer immediately. I also cleared up a question regarding a trick for figuring out multiplication problems with the number 9, which she had originally thought applied to all multiplication problems. We also did more mental math practice with addition and subtraction. She can now do problems fairly easily without using her fingers, though it does sometimes take her a little time. I asked her to recite the multiples of 3 every day so that she remembers them. I will also be assigning some homework for her to do.

Tonight, the student began with her math homework. She has a test tomorrow about triangles and proofs. She had a detailed study guide, most of which she had already completed, to work from. She was able to check her work with the answer key provided online, and for those items that she got incorrect, she was able to explain to me the error, how she got there, and then how she should fix the issue. We then moved on to her Latin review, another subject in which she has a test tomorrow. The test, covering mythology, is based on a text that she read in class. She will have to know certain gods, their names in Latin and Greek, their family tree, and their powers, and then a handful of stories based on those gods. We made a detailed family tree of the gods and discussed the origins of the gods. We also made a chart of the names and powers of each god. When I left, she was making flashcards of the same material to help her prepare.

The student and I worked on test #2. We worked on converting fractions to decimals a little more, and then worked through the test fairly quickly. He seemed to understand the problems pretty well. We moved on to scale factors, which he has been working on in class. He seemed to understand basic unit scales well when we did problems with them. However, he needed help when we did multi-step problems (unit rate to scale factors to find a proportion). We did two problems together, and he could explain what happened with the math. We will run another scale factor problem next week if time permits. I also asked him to complete 3 multiplication mad minutes for next week.

The student got all of her homework done, helped by the fact that she had done a significant part of it herself before I got there. She did her math, her current events, and her reading log. We then were able to sit down for 40 minutes of reading. I looked over her Spanish tests, and in the future we're going to be working a lot on correct spelling and accents, since that is where she lost a lot of points on her most recent test. I also want to work with her on traditional long division, because she uses basically a guess-and-check method that takes a lot of time. The extra time in our sessions has been helpful as there is much less rushing in order to get all her work done.

Today the student and I worked with sections 3.4 and 3.5. He was able to understand finding zeros using synthetic division in 3.4. It was broken down easily for him by the teacher and I was able to explain it in a more simplified manner. With 3.5 we practiced finding vertical and horizontal asymptotes. He reported that he felt more prepared for the quiz later this week. I encouraged him to keep practicing. He also reported that he was able to obtain a 90% in his pass quiz which was a nice increase from his previous grades.
