Each of the independent SSAT tutors that we could help you see in Sunrise Manor is a seasoned professional who likely knows all about each level of the SSAT and how to help every student succeed on it. The student and I moved into reading comprehension and Math. I was impressed with his ability to incorporate new strategies into his problem-solving. The more that he repeats his practice, the more he will improve. I asked him to buy a book and work hard with it.

The student and I practiced analogies problems today. We spent the entire session working on sets and attempting to narrow down the answer choices to be able to guess from the least number of choices. I want to spend the majority of the remaining sessions on verbal and reading comprehension, as these are the student's main areas of weakness, though he has recently been improving on reading comprehension. I have given him several sets of problems for homework, as well as definitions of 63 words to look up and form sentences with - I've also advised that he should spend 15 minutes every evening after his schoolwork to complete one exercise instead of doing it all in one sitting. This will also keep his practice regular.

The student and I primarily worked on synonyms and analogies, with a few short passages. We continued working through Alice in Wonderland, looking at symbolism, puns, and other literary devices as a review. Continue to watch for inference and cause and effect questions - always go back to the passage to find the answer, even if you think you remember it.

The student and I reviewed a number of math questions, reviewing her errors on a diagnostic test and continuing to work on a practice test I emailed. We went over the concept of rationalizing a fraction and the formula for average speed. We also reviewed the definition of integers and prime numbers. Overall, she is improving consistently. For homework, she should complete the second practice test I emailed her as well as a diagnostic test, if she has additional time.

The student and I reviewed all sections during our session today. We went through a vocabulary synonym section and added the words she missed to her vocabulary list. We spent a fair amount of time on a large analogy section, as well. We reviewed many reading exercises, focusing on poetry in particular, which gave her some trouble at first, but she was getting the hang of it by the end. We will continue to work on poetry passages, as those prove more challenging to her than the more conventional prose passages. We covered practice drills in nearly all general math areas, from geometry to algebra to more general arithmetic. Algebra inequality questions were giving her some trouble, but we spent time reviewing how to approach those today. She has homework in all areas, including a new essay for two weeks from today.
