How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

Taking the SAT can be a nerve-wracking experiencing. You feel pressured to potentially improve on the test, because you know that your overall score can make or break your entrance into the college of your choice. You also might not be sure what to expect come test day. Instead of letting fear take control, take charge, with a tutor who might help you understand your fears of the SAT. Varsity Tutors can help you locate an independent tutor in Sunrise Manor, NV, experienced in helping students prepare for the SAT.

The SAT focuses on several different components. These include writing and language, critical reading, mathematics, and an optional essay. Except for the essay, everything is multiple choice. The exam lasts about four hours, and it is possible to get a score from 400 to 1600. During the test, you are expected to solve math and word problems, draw conclusions, and identify types of different writing. You may struggle with one of the subjects, such as critical reading, or perhaps taking tests in general just makes you nervous. It doesn't have to be as scary as it sounds, though. Our educational directors can find an exceptional SAT tutor in Sunrise Manor who can try to help you discover a newfound appreciation for the test.

This was the student's last session of SAT tutoring, as he is taking the exam this Saturday. I have seen huge progress in his SAT skills since about a month ago when we started working together. He seems confident in his abilities for the test. Today, we focused on each of the sections.

This week the student worked on math. I noticed that, on several multi-step problems (usually word problems), he would either try to combine steps before writing them down or skip steps completely. I told him to write all of the information down so that, at the very least, he'd be able to quickly figure out where he went wrong if he got the wrong answer. He doesn't seem to be anxious or worried about the test at all, which is a good sign.

This week we worked on a broad overview of topics to try to cover a wide range of SAT content. We looked at grammar questions, vocabulary questions, passage-based questions in history and literature, geometry questions, and algebra questions. We discussed how the SAT often contains questions that seem very complicated at first glance but are actually not difficult at all when you break the question into smaller steps. We also talked about test-taking strategies such as reading the question before a passage to see what the test is looking for, and eliminating multiple choice options that are clearly not correct to narrow down the range of possibilities. I left the student with a suggestion that he spend some time on a vocab website in the upcoming week to work more on vocab in a fun game-like atmosphere, since that seems to be an obstacle for him in understanding some of the critical reading questions.

This week, she read the essay chapters in the big SAT prep book, and she got a slightly better feel for the typical differences between essays that would probably score 2, 3, and 4 on a scale of 1-4 (although the difference between 3 and 4 is more subtle). She also did three tune-up exercises in the math workbook. For next week, she will begin the reading and writing chapters in the SAT prep book and continue from where we left off today in the SAT math workbook. Our activities today concentrated on the quadratic formula as applied in solving 9 different questions, including cases where rational equations end up becoming quadratic equations (because of using common denominators containing "x^2"). Here (as elsewhere), it is critical to be careful and check her work at every step (and also check it against the originally stated question), since there are many opportunities for simple mistakes and copying errors.
