Session Summaries by Spanish Tutors

Sunrise, FL Spanish tutoring
Today's class went by very quickly because we were working so hard. The student did a great job of recognizing that finals prep is the time to put your head down and work. Together, we completed both the homework that we couldn't do last session and the homework that followed. We then moved on to the concepts that she's marked as "must study". We thoroughly hammered out relative pronouns before the end of the session. We'll get through the rest of them during our last session before the final.

Today, the student and I met for our third session. We did translation exercises using the verbs where I provided an English statement and he had to respond with the correct translation in Spanish. We then incorporated vocabulary terms from his index cards and reviewed from English to Spanish and made sure to set aside the terms that need additional study. We used some of the terms to create complex sentences and are working on incorporating interrogative adverbs in his speech. We are working on improving his pronunciation, and I have him improve with eliminating extra prepositions when he speaks. We will continue to review his flash cards and start transferring some vocabulary into charts to help him memorize the terms. In our future lessons, we will start working on using conjugated verbs with infinitives and move on to speaking in the past tense.

We practiced conjugating a list of -ar verbs on page 47 of the textbook we are using. We also played a 'guess the famous person/character' game in which we had to use only Spanish to make the other person guess who we were thinking of. We practiced asking questions about likes and dislikes using phrases that go together, i.e. 'dance the merengue' or 'study physics'. We also imagined we were university students and asked about one another's courses. I asked the student to write an essay using present tense verbs to describe what he typically does in a week.
