Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Sunrise, FL Phonics tutoring
This was the first session in which I began recording the student so that he may edit and correct himself. We began with reading and re-reading a number of different poems, all of different difficulty levels. I recorded him, played the recording back to him, and allowed him to correct and edit himself. He did very well with this. Then, to give him a break, he did a word search puzzle for 20 minutes. I then recorded him reading a short story. I stopped him after each page and allowed him to critique himself.

The student has her English midterm exam on Friday. Her study guide shows that the exam will consist more of skills than having to memorize anything from readings this semester. There will be multiple reading excerpts, some with comprehension questions, some with editing and revising questions, and some with analysis questions. There will also be some vocabulary based on literary terms and a persuasive essay for her to write. She had the definitions written down and seemed to know them pretty well. I asked if she would rather practice reading or writing, and she said she practices writing every week in class and does pretty well, so she practiced reading comprehension for the rest of the session. She seemed to really enjoy it and said she would continue after I left.

For the first hour the student and I reviewed an in-class essay on which she received a 73. I helped her revise it by having her complete a graphic organizer, then she began to pre-write, and finally she wrote up a first draft. Once she completed this, I then instructed her to go within the draft, and underline her thesis, supporting details, and her conclusion. Next, we discussed how to make connections within the text. I asked her to write down what she could remember from the semester assignments assigned by her teacher. Then, I instructed her to make connections, by looking at similar themes. She works extremely well when we practice one on one together. I suggested that she can read short stories, articles, and poems to increase vocabulary, assist with making connections, and to increase focus.

I suggested that the student use the MLA template from MS Word for his paper. I also made comments on the parts of his rough draft that he has written so far. I also created a checklist for him so that he can use it to make sure he has included everything his professor wants him to include.

Today, the student spent the bulk of her session completing a classroom project. She chose to be an editor/ publisher for the 'Boston Daily News' during the Revolutionary War. She created multiple pages that included a clever ad for Flint & Steel. Additionally, she used online resources to write about Crispus Attucks and the Boston Massacre. I thought she was skilled at summarizing and synthesizing the information about his family and life while crafting it in her own language. She explained that her entire class would complete each student's respective project in class tomorrow.
