Today, we covered a short review on time, days, and dates, and then we covered "whose" (dare no), "also" (mo), and "is not" (ja nai). We then did some review of useful classroom phrases and talked about food/menu items. For Thursday, we'll review the student's Kanji progress and start on chapter 3 of the text.

The student is now reviewing for his end of course exam. He just got tested on his second semester work and feels confident about how he did, so for this session we worked on reviewing some of the topics covered in the fall of this school year. For the first part of the session, he worked on irregular verbs in the present tense. He is remembering a lot of what he needs to for this review, which shows me that his retention and recall have improved quite a bit since we began working together. After finishing the irregular verb practice, he moved on to studying reflexive verbs. His homework for this week is just to continue reviewing for his final exam.

Today the student and I spent a lot of time working with numbers one through ten by counting some buttons I brought. I'm so pleased to say that she has one through five down, as well as the number seven. She is growing more confident in counting and often says the numbers before me. As before, she does a great job identifying big and small. We also read Peter Rabbit together and I used some French terms where appropriate. Over the next week, we will continue working with numbers, colors, and animals.

During this session, the student and I began a comprehensive review of grammar and vocab in preparation for his final tests and the state assessment exam. We reviewed all past vocabulary sections in his text book, going through the vocab list and selecting words to write sentences with (in preparation for his upcoming written test). We reviewed present, preterite and imperfect verb conjugations, in particular the most common irregular verbs (ser, hacer, tener, etc.). We also reviewed the structure and use of the verbs gustar and encantar, and the meaning and use of reflexive verbs. We ended with a review of the past participle and how it is formed, including how it is formed for regular verbs and irregular past participles. I recommended that he continue with his vocab review, and review the meaning for each verb on his list and conjugate it in the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses.

We did a mini quiz on the topics we have covered so far. The student did fairly well. His vocab was perfect and he knew his kanji. He just needed to review the writing order of the kanji a little more. His grammar part was a little tough, because he needed to read and understand the passage to know where each grammar point went. We started his first semester syllabus instead of continuing with the second semester syllabus. He was way more comfortable with this beginning material. He got a lot of vocab words he needs to learn by Thursday. He should also be continuing to study his Japanese hiragana and katakana, because we will be using that for answering vocab words from here on out.

In today's session we practiced conjugating regular and irregular AR, ER, and IR verbs in the preterite, conditional, and future tenses in preparation for the student's grammatical exam. We did this by completing textbook grammar activities. She also worked on her Spanish fluency since we completed the activities orally. At the beginning of the exercises she used the grammatical endings that we brainstormed on the whiteboard in order to complete the conjugations, but by the end was able to produce the conjugations on her own without looking at the board.
