Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we focused on solving linear systems by substitution, graphing and adding and subtracting. We also worked on multiplying and dividing exponents. The student's attitude was eager to learn. I added to the study guide some equations like how to multiply and divide exponents. We have one more session before his test. Good progress; we got a lot of sections done today."
"We continued working on the comprehensive algebra assessment. This part of the assessment dealt more with finding the equation of a line and determining trend information. We reviewed as needed as we went along. Some of the problems weren't covered in algebra, but we were able to use our problem solving skills to figure them out."
"New concepts were presented to the student: Given the equation of a line, find the slope and y-intercept using y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-int.; find the slope of a line given 2 points using the slope formula m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1); translate word phrases into math expressions; solve more linear equations; find x when y = a given number in a linear equation. He was cautioned to perform the subtraction "in the same order" for y and x in the slope formula. He was given practice on the above concepts prior to our next session."
"We went over how to read math with symbols. We also did conjunctions. The student struggles in understanding how to read the conjunctions and how to convert a sentence to symbols and variables. I helped him understand the relationship between the words and variables and symbols. He was very excited and happy when he started doing the problems with ease. His grade went from 56% to 83%."
"Tonight the student and I continued working our way through the algebra textbook. We finished chapter 11 which was just a geometry review (she had no problem with this, it was sin, cos, tan of right triangles) and then continued on to chapter 12, the final chapter in the algebra textbook. Chapter 12 is rational expressions. We worked together on several problems simplifying rational expressions that involved factoring. She was a little rusty on factoring so I took the time to give her a good review and overall she did well despite making mistakes in the beginning. I think that the more she practices, the better she will get. We'll continue our algebra I review next session and hopefully begin going over algebra II at least a little before school starts for her."
"Today the student completed her module 8 quiz and worked on perfect square trinomials and difference of squares. We then went through the module 8 review. I am so proud of her work in this section. She even told me that she loved polynomials! We are making huge steps forward."
