Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"When I first met the student, I had her complete an abridged SAT diagnostic test. She scored best in Writing (multiple choice), so I saved it for her last session. We covered writing test taking strategies, practicing all three types of questions- identifying sentence error, improving sentences, improving paragraphs- and learned the most common errors. We did extensive practice and then reviewed grammar. I wrote ten questions on the board and had her identify the error and the associated grammar rule broken. We learned about pronouns and their tenses and the correct verb tenses associated with each case. We ended with her practicing her essay outline for a timed essay."
"This was our last meeting before the student takes the SAT. She took another practice test before our session and we worked through problems of every type, like we did last time, focusing on the problems that gave her the most trouble while taking the test. She improved dramatically in the reading and writing sections (especially the essay), and I think she'll do really well on Saturday."
"Today, we reviewed math strategy and practiced several problems with such. The student was hesitant again about the plug-in strategy, but I feel that she became more amenable to it as we went through some more difficult examples. We then reviewed concepts in geometry, such as circle and triangle properties. We finished things off with grammar review and a practice section of writing. She did very well here, only missing some of the more subtle errors on the test. With continued practice, she will catch these with ease. I would recommend that she do one practice section of math as well as one practice section of writing on her own. She should also continuously go through SAT vocabulary on her own. It takes about 7+ novel uses of the word in a sentence in order to commit it to long-term memory."
