Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Kendra in Vernon Hills, IL
The student worked on an assignment accompanying her current reading book, The Hobbit. She worked on developing a character and wrote a one page description of that new character that included an explanation of their role in the plot. She will be drawing a picture to go along with what she wrote. We then reviewed her social studies study guide in preparation for a test she has next week. We worked on the vocabulary and conceptual questions that covered all the topics. She knew all of the vocabulary but plans to review further before the test to make sure she can fully explain all of her answers and ideas. A great session overall!

Summer Tutoring review by Wen in Vernon Hills, IL
Today I want to review her pronunciation, so we go over some stuff we've learned in the past sections. Avery is good at memorizing words but need more time one the tone. We learned some "opposite meaning words" last time, she memorized most of them. I think we may need to more time to practice how to use opposite words. Then, I checked her work and I recommended she needed to prepare some flash cards to better enhance her memory. Today's class: 1. learn more opposite words 2. number 10000 to 99999 3. new words and meaning 4. new sentence and common phrase ("I don't know how to say, wait a minute...") Homework: 1. quiz for pin yin 2. opposite words 3. new words

Summer Tutoring review by Darren in Vernon Hills, IL
The student and I spent most of our session yesterday working through his math assignment. We took an excursus to go over a different method for averaging sets of numbers and the student seemed really to enjoy this (taking detailed notes on a notecard). We practiced by calculating without using a calculator or a pencil that a person had averaged 14.25 points per game for his past 12 games. We ended by looking a bit at a Homeric Hymn to Apollo that I brought because he is doing a project for school on Apollo. I copied the poem from the Loeb classical library series and I took him through the first line in Greek, pointing out a few words that have English cognates.

For this session we covered some concepts of Chemistry. To be more specific we covered solubility, acid base reactions, and balancing chemical equations. The student seemed to be struggling with solubility the most out of all the concepts that we covered. I did leave them with some online videos that they can watch so they can better understand the concept. I also made sure that each problem we went through he understood clearly, if I saw that grasped the concept then we moved on to the other problems.

We went over the student's social studies assignment to write a thesis for 3 factors that contributed to the rise and fall of a civilization. We chose Rome and bookmarked websites to use as sources. She wrote down notes for three factors from her textbook and from one of the sites. We also went over multiplication of binomials. The session went very well.

We worked to prepare for his algebra test tomorrow. I prepared a worksheet for him breaking factoring down step by step. He is still struggling with this. We will need to do more practice on this until he gets it down.
