Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Jennifer in Taylorsville, UT
The student worked very hard today! We spent the first part of our session on parts of a sentence. We played a game and identified nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. We will continue with this for the next weeks. We spent time on math problems using a number line to complete missing addends. Finally, she read a passage and completed vocabulary and comprehension questions. Overall, it is so amazing to see her progress as she has over the months. I will contact her teacher to see what areas we should add to our sessions.

Summer Tutoring review by Nikki in Taylorsville, UT
The student and I worked on reading, spelling, and writing this session. We co-read the "The Six Swans" from one of her readers. While reading, I asked several comprehension questions that she effectively answered. She was also able to complete a prediction/inference activity from the reading. We also reviewed her high-frequency words and her spelling words. Lastly, we completed a genre/literacy worksheet about fables. She effectively completed the worksheet with little assistance. She was also able to provide the definition of a fable. She was very engaged during the session and even wanted to do more. We are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday. During Wednesday's session, I would like to focus more on Math.

She was able to state how many were in the tens place and how many were in the ones place. She read Surprise for a Princess, a level 2 reader with assistance. She also read A Trip Into Space with assistance. She then did a 3 minute addition drill worksheet using the number line.

Summer Tutoring review by Endia in Taylorsville, UT
The student began his tutoring session with reviewing problem solving skills using addition and subtraction. He solved problems using 2-digit addition and 2-digit subtraction. Next, he practiced reading fluency and comprehension by reading passages and answering questions. He completed a nonfiction and a fiction passage. Lastly, he read a fiction story focusing on reading with expression and accuracy. We discussed the meaning of unknown words in the text and answered questions for comprehension. We talked about state criteria and moving toward reading chapter books. I suggested the Magic Tree House books and Because of Winn Dixie, which are good chapter books for 2nd/3rd grade students.
