Summer Tutoring review by Jennifer in Schenectady, NY
The student has her first set of homework from second grade, which includes reading and math. She started on some of the math and was very proficient working independently. She has a new spelling list which we focused on as well. She has a science project with a plant theme and she is very enthusiastic to start on it. We read a passage related to plant parts and then answered comprehension/vocabulary questions over the reading.

Summer Tutoring review by Nichole in Schenectady, NY
The student did some spelling work in his second grade book and did 10 minutes of math. He is a very intelligent young man. He is doing word problems with addition and subtraction in second grade! I started him writing down the key information from the word problem and then identifying the parts of the expression he wrote down. This forced him to cognitively think about the words in the word problem and their relationship with the math expression he was to solve. This will allow him to accomplish the word problems when they get harder in the future. Too many students in middle and high school develop a huge fear of word problems because they were not taught how to interpret them when they were first introduced to the problems. I am trying to combat that outcome with this strategy in math. We also read the word problems to figure out what the numbers represented in the problem so the student practiced his reading while doing his math! Two subjects at once!

Summer Tutoring review by Jenna in Schenectady, NY
The first student and I reviewed rounding to the nearest ten, and then learned rounding to the nearest hundred. Then, we did a short reading about butterflies and answered some multiple choice questions. The second student and I figured out the missing fractions to create whole numbers, and then switched to adding irregular fractions with different denominators. Finally, he and I did a reading about Apollo and the Oracle at Delphi, and answered some reading comprehension questions.
