This was our last session before he takes the exam on Saturday. We continued to work on how to attack the problems in a practice exam.

Summer Tutoring review by Colleen in Lansing, IL
The student's homework included a short writing assignment and a longer 1-page assignment with no due date as yet. We read and annotated some of the reading for the short assignment, which was beneficial because there were economic concepts that the student needed to process for quite a bit before he understood them. We discussed standards and expectations again, and this time I had the student rate himself on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being an F student and 10 being valedictorian. He rated himself a 7-8, which he said he based on comparing himself to his peers. I expected this, which is why I had him do it, because the student needs to understand his performance, and he needs to raise his own personal standards and expectations and make a plan to meet them. I showed him why his actual performance is about a 3-4 (tactfully, of course). I followed this by telling him he is capable of much more, and has the ability to achieve whatever he sets out to achieve. This led to a conversation about how to integrate homework into his life as a standard practice rather than an afterthought or something he squeezes in between his "real life" activities. We discussed "work/life balance" and how to create a schedule that allowed him to work and play and get his obligations taken care of. (I showed him the TV commercial about parents who don't take their accrued vacation days as an example of people who don't have a good work/life balance.) Finally I showed him a new website I'd found for studying math, which we will trial for about 30 days. It is more interactive than other sites, and it has him work problems for every topic he will encounter in this year's math program. If he misses the problem, an instant explanation appears that is very thorough and easy to understand. I have high hopes for this program, which I think will work if I can convince him to actually use it.

Summer Tutoring review by Sarah in Lansing, IL
As usual, we started by making a homework plan. I have asked that she spend tonight and tomorrow focusing on the history readings, then finish them and catch up on the English readings. Once she gets past those assessments, the rest of the week should be manageable for her. We also went over her recent Biology test to discuss concepts she was still having trouble with, so that she will be able to do her test corrections more easily. On this most recent test, and on her other tests, quizzes, and other big grades recently, she has mostly been making B's and low A's. She particularly deserves recognition for her recent grades in French, and for the fact that she has been studying French on her own initiative in order to maintain those grades. She made flashcards on her own this week; I was very proud of her. During the latter part of the session, we studied for her French quiz, and she started her first make-up history reading.

Summer Tutoring review by Nicole in Lansing, IL
For this session, we reviewed and edited the student's essay about his trip to China. He did a great job on his rough draft and I could tell that he was interested in writing about his trip. We also read a story and answered vocabulary and comprehension questions. We reviewed fact and opinion and practiced answering questions from a timeline. He did an excellent job and stayed focused throughout the session.

Summer Tutoring review by Nathan in Lansing, IL
The student and I started with a quick sweep through his math packet. Most of it was too easy, but we spent a solid amount of time working on parallel lines cut by a transversal. He showed a strong grasp on angle relationships and their names. Afterwards, I had him write a simple persuasive essay. His general organization was clean. I asked him to write about a situation in which he was excited; he chose when his team won a rugby championship. I asked him to make a habit of journaling so that he can practice turning his thoughts and feelings into words.

Summer Tutoring review by Winnie in Lansing, IL
I proof read the student's English essay. Afterwards, our session was spent learning new material and reviewing old topics. For new material we covered transformation: translation, reflection and rotation. After covering the new topics we made flashcards for the new terms and also did practice problems over them. We then flipped through his new algebra workbook and we did practice problems over various topics we covered over the summer. This includes: order of operations, adding/ subtracting fractions, mean, median and mode, square roots, 2 step problems, and interpreting graphs. The student was very positive throughout our session.
