Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Kate in La Habra, CA
Today, Student 1 and I continued reviewing for her pre-algebra test. Her teacher had posted a comprehensive review on their online forum, so we worked through that together. When our time was up, I left her with 5 problems to complete on her own. The answers were provided, so she could check them herself. For the next session, we will go back into the textbook to work through additional concepts that she wants to reinforce. I instructed her to make flashcards to help her memorize little facts that will aid her for her test. I also asked her about her reading assignment for Lord of the Flies. She has already read the assigned chapter and completed her vocabulary assignment for the week. Student 2 and I talked about how his math test went that day; he told me he felt good about it. We continued to review for his spelling test on Friday, and he excelled. The mistakes he was making yesterday were all corrected today. I also brought a reading comprehension article for him to work on. He read the article well, and he did exceptionally on the vocabulary matching section of the worksheet. The one word he did not know, canopy, he was able to locate in the article to find the answer from context clues. He also did well in the multiple choice section, effectively using process of elimination for some of the questions. Finally, I had him write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting two elements of the article. His sentence structure was solid, and the content contained examples from the text, which shows progress.

Summer Tutoring review by Laura in La Habra, CA
The student started new units in math, physics, English, and history this week; it's going to be a busy month for him! We talked through an English essay on the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the student came up with a tentative thesis and made a rough outline for the essay. He plans to complete a draft of the essay before our session on Monday, so we can look it over together. He has a group presentation and test in Health class, so we talked in detail about how he can ace both of these in order to bring his Health/PE grade up to an A. He then made a detailed study schedule through next Tuesday. He has more work than usual over the next week, including big assignments in Health, Public Speaking, and English, so we strategized the best way to get everything done. I emphasized the need to keep up in Spanish (currently the student's lowest grade) even though he doesn't have any big assignments in the class, and the student agreed that this issue-- focusing on big assignments in classes in which he was already doing well, at the expense of falling further behind in classes in which he was doing more poorly-- was a major reason his grades suffered last year. Overall, the student was energetic and enthusiastic during our session. His attitude has definitely improved since we started tutoring!

Summer Tutoring review by Jeremy in La Habra, CA
Today we specifically reviewed the student's Biology project: creating an entity analogy for the cell and its organelles. The student agreed that turning the project in early for extra credit is a great way to raise his grade in the class, and plans to have the project completed by the deadline. I discussed the project with the student and we came up with a few options as far as a cell entity: ship, city, fancy car, country and a factory. I told him that we should lean towards an entity that is fun and unique, and the student seemed to like the ship concept the best. I asked that the student create analogies for each organelle pertaining to the ship entity and have that ready for Wednesday, and I will review them with him and then he can move forward in the project. The student did a good job today, especially on the project. He is progressing to meet his goals.

I drilled the student on subtraction facts. We also completed her spelling homework, which she did easily, and her math homework. I think we will try flashcards to help with her math next week.

Summer Tutoring review by Charlie in La Habra, CA
This session focused on simply drilling basic math skills with the student, doing rapid-fire addition and subtraction problems, and doing physically active skip-counting (beginning to focus on how this links with actual multiplication/times tables). His focus continues to be solid, which is a great improvement over last year.

Summer Tutoring review by Adrienne in La Habra, CA
The student read a level E reader independently. She then worked on her spelling words, writing them 3x each and putting them in alphabetical order. She then completed her math homework worksheet, drawing pictures to solve equations working with equal groups. We reviewed concepts that will be on her math test on Friday, such as adding and subtracting with a number line, adding 3 addends, drawing pictures to solve a problem read to her and paying attention to the numerical sign in the equation. She did very well with all concepts.
