Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Sarah in Joliet, IL
At the beginning of the session, we looked over the homework due dates for the week, and I laid out a day-by-day suggested homework schedule for the student. We spent the remainder of the session studying for her French test, which will be split over Tuesday and Wednesday. She should be prepared to finish studying for the test on her own. I left a list of materials she should review and steps she should take to prepare for the test. I asked that she spend the afternoon catching up on her history assignments, especially since she has four due this week and a test early next week. By our next session in a week, she needs to be fully caught up on the history assignments so we will be able to study for the test effectively.

Summer Tutoring review by Clinton in Joliet, IL
At today's session, the student and I filled in his agenda book with this week's assignments and tests/ quizzes. He has a history quiz on Thursday so I made sure to emphasize to him that he needs to study for this. He did fill in things in his agenda book on his own, over the weekend, and this made me happy. I think he is really starting to master the concept of an agenda book, and he says he feels more organized after using it. I helped Jared study for his history quiz. He had a review sheet with lots of important terms on it, and their definitions. I quizzed him on these terms, to help him remember them. He initially struggled with a few of the terms. The student's father printed out a PowerPoint on study skills that he wanted me to show the student. So we also went over those slides during our session.

Summer Tutoring review by Eli in Joliet, IL
Today we got familiar with an online note-taking program. I had my student set up all of his subjects in notebooks, and then showed him how to create PDFs of his assignments and drag and drop them into his notes. We made a separate to-do list file that he can keep with his assignments that differentiates tasks according to urgency. We then went over his upcoming World History assignment. We read over the directions and discussed the objectives, then I had him write the first page. We went over this to clarify ideas relating to government and economic models (comparing governments, which are housed in individual nation states, to economies, which are highly influenced and formed by multinational corporations that often have no singular national affiliation). We broke down some of the elements of the paragraphs he had written, analyzing them for clarity, word choice, grammar, and sentence structure.

Summer Tutoring review by Chelsea in Joliet, IL
The first student and I reviewed a grammar activity she had completed before I arrived, then we reviewed for her integers math quiz tomorrow. She seemed very comfortable with the material. The second student worked on a chemistry lab assignment she was to complete after analyzing data tables she constructed in class. She has an English vocabulary quiz tomorrow, so I quizzed her on her unit terms and we reviewed and created examples for terms she did not know. The third student worked on a tedious calculus assignment. He has a physiology term quiz tomorrow, so we spent some time reviewing terms from last week to make sure he had those down, and started reviewing cavities of the body. He was planning on spending the rest of the evening reviewing bone terminology.

Summer Tutoring review by Gabriel in Joliet, IL
Today's session focused on biology note taking and what to expect in the next couple of chapters, which is mainly focused on the Tree of Life and all of its many branches. I explained to her the next areas will be mostly vocabulary focused with a small amount of chemistry. We will begin to prepare for her next exam on Thursday. We also worked on a few algebra problems which she seems to be picking up much better now. She appears to be making good progress.
