The student had all his assignments written down and checked off for the week when I arrived. He was upbeat, and ready to work. We started on math. He got tripped up a bit on order of operations, but once reminded of the acronym PEMDAS, was able to figure it out on his own. After math, we moved on to his roots packet. We finished with time to spare. He has two more things to do, one a small essay, the other is organizing and filling in his notebook. He remembered his mantra, and hopefully he will stay on track with his focus and motivation in the future.

The student and I picked up with our work on her English essay. The student has moved to the writing stage since our last meeting, and she's well on her way to an excellent paper. The student has progressed steadily through all stages of this assignment, from identifying a topic and researching that topic, to formulating her thesis and gathering evidence to support it. I asked the student to send me her final draft this weekend, which I will review and offer whatever suggestions I can, but I am confident that she will produce a great paper. We also reviewed the student's other courses, her homework load, and the time she's spending on her work. The student still has a heavy workload, due to the number of honors courses she is taking, but her overall attitude seems more positive and confident than just a few months ago. I think it will be an ongoing process to find the perfect balance and to discover her own most productive way of studying and completing her homework, but I think she's made good progress over the past few months.

FIRST STUDENT: He had an upcoming vocabulary quiz. He took a few minutes to go over 10 new vocab words, then I quizzed him by giving the word and asking for the definition and vice versa. I also had him use the word in a sentence to check for deeper understanding and for extra practice. We were able to get through all 28 new vocabulary words in this manner. SECOND STUDENT: After finishing his math homework, he requested help prepping his computer to be returned to the district. Together we backed up his files to the cloud and cleared his computer of old files. He then looked through his homework and found out he had a short reading for religion. I checked for comprehension by having him summarize the text and asking questions. We then finished the session by practicing Spanish vocabulary. He took a few minutes to look it over, and then I quizzed him.

During this session, I helped the student review for her upcoming AP World History exam. I accessed multiple internet sites with test prep questions. She also worked on the released older version of the exam. She needs to remember to take her time while testing. When we went back to review some of the questions she missed, she admitted to reading them too quickly and knew the correct answer when she slowed her pace down some. Also, another area she struggled with was second guessing herself and not going with her first answer selection. I gave her some tips for slowing down, like underlining key words in the question or making connections and also encouraged her to go with her first answer choice. Her attitude was positive and she was receptive to all feedback provided. For her studying on Wednesday, I encouraged her to make flashcards for the questions she missed, study them, then retake the AP exam. If she misses any questions on this attempt, I encouraged her to google the topics she was struggling with to remind herself of what was covered throughout the school year. Overall, the session went well.

Student M - We spent a lot of time during this session studying for her upcoming math test. She was making good progress and feeling more prepared by the end of the session. She also cleaned out her folder as we had discussed last week and will work on staying organized until the end of the school year. Every week, I will check to make sure she is still working on this. While I worked with the other students, she began putting together her human body children's book and continuing to practice her math problems. Student J - We spent the time discussing studying techniques for his AP World test. He agreed to continue to take practice multiple choice questions and go back over the ones that he got wrong to make sure he understands the topic. He was also explaining to me what he has to do in order to get a higher score on the essay questions. By talking through it, I think he was beginning to feel more comfortable with what he can change as he approaches thesis statements and what they are looking for when grading the test. Student L - She read me her paper she was working on as she proofread it. Next week, I will discuss her current work load so we can make sure she stays ahead of any studying.

We made a roadmap for his homework and tests for the week, and I had him do this on his own, setting priorities and deadlines. For new material, we reviewed strategies and techniques for note taking as the student is getting ready for finals. We reviewed outlines, flashcards, methods of note taking, and mind mapping. We practiced each of these and discussed which subject they'd work best for. He needs to commit to his planner or list tool, and also would greatly benefit from section dividers for his binder (discussed last session). Other than, we're making good progress!
