Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Abbi in Highland, IN
We reviewed his progress and the challenges. We talked about his schedule and ability to use his free periods for homework. He did not make the progress we talked about, but he did get some work done. We also worked on completing one biology homework packet and made good progress on a second assignment. I also talked with him about a lab he discovered when going through his folder, which he might be able to turn in soon.

Summer Tutoring review by Lyra in Highland, IN
Today the student and I went over the new material for her algebra class. We worked on finding the trig values of theta based on x and y coordinates of a point, and she picked that up easily. In general, this section seems to be going smoothly for her; She had already nearly finished the homework and only had a few short questions on it. We spent most of our time focusing on review for Chemistry and Algebra, which was very productive. Mostly we addressed balancing equations in chemistry, a subject that she is quite good. In algebra we did a review of exponent and radical rules and simplifications. She recalled almost everything with ease, and picked up quickly what she had not recalled on her own. Overall, it was a very positive session.

Summer Tutoring review by Nicole in Highland, IN
We discussed theories of evolution that included interpreting cladograms and also utilizing the Hardy Weinberg Principle from a lab done in class. The student was struggling with the Hardy Weinberg equation and how to apply it to data. He had a great attitude towards the material that was reviewed and he was open to getting help and always reassured that he understood the information. We will review these concepts again next week.

Summer Tutoring review by Grant in Highland, IN
We worked on the student's note-taking as we read chapter 22 sections 3-4, based on changes on the arts during the Enlightenment as well as the American Revolution. He worked on his ability to analyze the text and pull out the main idea for his outline. Afterwards, we did a practice passage for the English II state test and the student answered 6 questions from a nonfiction text. He was able to correctly answer all of the questions.

The student is working on his "Nation Now" assignment about South Africa. We looked at the best ways to do research for each of the questions, and talked about why those questions were important in the larger context. We spent a particular amount of time talking about Millennium Development Goals. Since his upcoming essay will be about big picture issues, making sure to understand where everything fits in the broader scheme of things is critical.

Summer Tutoring review by Alisha in Highland, IN
I helped the student learn how to use and navigate her new Apple iPad. I helped her create events in her calendar, download music, use office-friendly apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), use Audible, subscribe to podcasts, watch videos on Netflix, navigate Photos, use AirDrop with her iPhone and generally use her iPad more efficiently. She also downloaded an app to help her practice her typing, for which she has an external keyboard.
