How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

The fact is, summer learning loss is suffered at a high rate. Both kids and teens tend to lose many of their acquired academic skills during the summer months. This is mostly due to the fact that most kids don't study during this hot season. An excellent way to avoid this is to keep your child reading, writing, and studying. But, how do you do this with so much already on your plate? A skilled tutor in Denver may assess your child's academic abilities to help her/him perform her/his best in the summer.

During the summer, most kids and teens lose about two months' worth of learned math skills, with some losing about two to three months' worth of reading skills as well. Over the course of an entire high school career, this may create a learning deficit of about two to three years. This causes many high school teachers to waste about six weeks during the beginning of fall re-teaching these subjects. If you're preparing for the summer, Varsity Tutors' educational directors may assist you in finding an experienced tutor in Denver, CO, for your child.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Ramya in Denver, CO
In today's session, the student and I reviewed Chapter 18 in her textbook. We reviewed the major concepts, which included the characteristics of viruses, the Lysogenic and Lytic Cycles, viroids, prions, characteristics of bacteria, bacterial replication, transduction (generalized and specialized), transformation, and conjugation. She asked clarification questions, especially when she was unsure of something. She also took some notes. I suggested some study strategies (taking notes, skimming her AP book before reading the textbook, etc.) to help her break down the material in an understandable way. She has a really good attitude, and I am excited about working with her!

Covered ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas. Went over what terminology means (foci, vertices, etc.). Used completing the square to solve for equations and distinguish between ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas.

Summer Tutoring review by Antonio in Denver, CO
It was the last meeting with the student. I worked with him on imperfect use, which is complex and he is still in that lesson. I told him briefly what is ahead for him: past perfect, conditional, future, subjunctive. It was a pleasure to work with him.

Summer Tutoring review by Melissa in Denver, CO
The student and I had another great session today. We began with math. Our work today dealt with multiplying/dividing fractions and mixed numbers and solving equations (addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, and two-step solutions). He did very well overall. I reminded him to pay attention to sign (negative/positive) and be wary of simple errors. We then worked on grammar for the remainder of session. We worked on adjective/adverb phrases, independent/subordinate clauses, and sentence structure (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences). He did well overall, and we are going to work on helping him know how to talk his way through the grammar exercises.

Summer Tutoring review by Joaquin in Denver, CO
In this session we heard a melody the student recorded for his homework. We talked again about the different things we can use to have more variation such as slow down, using more silences, more or less notes, speed up, and dynamics such as louder and softer. Then, we used music software to play rhythms and notate them at the same time in the program. We practiced reading different rhythms and compared them to see if our playing was accurate with what we were reading. The student did very well. For the last part, we looked at some scenes he wants to use for his video project and use them on the next class.

Summer Tutoring review by Jazmyn in Denver, CO
Today, the student and I worked on her results and method section of her paper. First, we worked on her method section. In the method section we described the materials that were used in the study, the participants that participated in the study, and the design of the study. After we worked on the method section, we worked on the results section. We first analyzed the statistics of the given data and then utilized the information from the frequency tables, the descriptive tables, and the regression table to write the results section. We also included data from a table.
