How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Summer vacation may be a wonderful time for students and families alike, but it may also have negative consequences on the learning process. Researchers have found that time off in the summer may have an adverse effect on gaps in achievement. Students who were behind before the vacation began may find themselves even further back when school starts up again. Even children who were doing well may experience a two-month learning loss.

If you're concerned that your child might be in the process of dropping behind during the summer, private tutoring may be an excellent way to try to keep him or her on track. The tutors that Varsity Tutors may help you find in Cleveland are experienced professionals, skilled in working to help students try to understand the intricacies of summer learning. That may involve anything from helping your student keep his or her mind active through the reading of challenging books, to a more structured review of mathematics.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Melissa in Cleveland, OH
The student and I had a good final session. He worked on his social studies final project, which he is doing on Mexico. He has to complete a 4-page report regarding 8 different topics about the nation (e.g., government, religion, festivals, etc.). He had completed paragraphs on government and religion and we worked on editing these. I also went over his outline and made some general comments and suggestions. I reminded him to strive for clarity and fluidity in his writing (i.e., that he says what he means to and that his writing has an overall flow to it.). I cautioned him about awkward sentences and told him to make sure to really read over his writing and make sure it sounds right. It was a pleasure working with him and I wish him all the best!

Summer Tutoring review by Joaquin in Cleveland, OH
In this session we started practicing the two chords em and AM in the guitar combined with an exercise for the right hand to arpeggiate the chords. Then, we introduced a new chord: DM. These chords will be used for his first song on the guitar. On piano we used the two chords he learned last class, and he learned two more. We played these chords as five-finger patterns and then we wrote them in the grand staff. We started playing these chords in a progression that is the introduction of the pop song he wants to learn. He seemed very excited when he heard that the chords we are learning sounded the same as in the song he likes! We'll keep learning the song in the next lessons.

Summer Tutoring review by Peter in Cleveland, OH
The student and I discussed adrenergic and antiarrhythmic drugs today. We went into the two classes of adrenergic drugs, those which enhance adrenergic activity and those which inhibit it. These drugs work on 4 different receptor types: alpha1, alpha2, beta1, and beta2 and whether they inhibit or enhance the effects of those receptors, determines the body's reaction. For antiarrhythmic drugs, we reviewed heart physiology, specifically the movement of ions and how it correlates to action potential and heart muscle contraction. Then we learned how changing those ions' movements can affect heart rate and strength of contraction.

The student and I updated his calendar with a few new dates and reviewed all of his midterm assignments. We have addressed a few issues in order to guarantee that he gets at least a B on his musicology test next time. In addition, we reviewed some study and note-taking strategies.

Today, the student and I worked on her Research Methods class. First, we found six sources about her topic (how age and full-time status effects GPA) that would be appropriate for her literature review. She will use those sources in the upcoming week to develop her literature review. We then focused on setting up her title page and her references page. We worked on the formatting for a running head, a header, page numbers, and references. Lastly, we worked on some computer basics that will help her develop her literature review in the upcoming week.

We continued covering several epidemiology topics and concepts and built upon the concepts we had previously covered. We applied these new epidemiological concepts to the critical analysis of an epidemiological study.
