Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Melissa in Cincinnati, OH
The student and I had a great session today. We began with math. We briefly reviewed fractions (I plan to complete an assignment with her on Wednesday). We then did some more practice with adding/subtracting money (in 3-digit number form). She seems to have finally mastered the concept of "borrowing" in subtraction. We then did some multiplication word problems. She and I then worked on writing thank you notes to her 2 teachers. We will complete creative writing assignment in next session.

The student and I spoke about electrolytes today and respiratory conditions. We went into depth about tonicity, and how different concentrations of salt solutions can have an affect over shrinking and swelling cells. This is important for the usage of different IV solutions. We reviewed information about diuretics and anti-infection medication.

Today the student and I engaged in a close reading of Hume's Treatise Concerning Human Nature. We focused on book II and on the discussion of the differences between passions and reason, and his arguments for why reason can neither motivate action (because action is motivated by passions), nor can it motivate passions (since reason is inert and passions are active). She continues to be an excellent student and to engage well with the text. Her questions are well-modulated to philosophical analysis, and I believe her progress demonstrates the work she has done.

Summer Tutoring review by Joaquin in Cincinnati, OH
We played new rhythmic patterns and introduced new note values. The student has done very well reading the rhythms and clapping them. We kept practicing five-finger patterns in white keys. This has been more challenging, but he is making progress. We used the five-finger patterns to introduce chords in the piano and he learned the first two chords for his side project where he wants to learn a pop song that he likes. On guitar we practiced going from em chord to AM chord and he has been getting better. We are still working on having a good position so that he feels comfortable with the guitar. Also, we practiced an exercise for the left hand.

Summer Tutoring review by Adrian in Cincinnati, OH
The student and I reviewed his calendar and made sure that any extra appointments or activities were logged and registered. We discussed the week and looked up all of his assignment deadlines for the upcoming week and a half or so. He seems to be on top of all of his work, rehearsals, etc. As far as for next week, he is to bring in all graded homework, any test feedback (or we'll look at it online), bring something to work on to complete during downtime, and he is to show me that he has been writing the date(s) in his notes. Based on how his midterm grades were, I will be adjusting the contents of next week's session.

Summer Tutoring review by Judy in Cincinnati, OH
The student wants to increase her success in school by getting more organized. We started by working with two column notes. She will be taking notes on the right side of the page. On the left side, she will create questions about the topic. This will facilitate reviewing for tests. She can use this review alone or with another person. Next, we worked on removing distractions from her study area. She will keep in mind that she should put a time limit on being off-task when at her desk. Finally we worked on goals to increase her success. The student keeps the written copies of our work. Our meeting date has been changed to Thursday at 2:45-4:15. Next week, we continue by reviewing what we learned and then moving onto other organizational strategies. The student is eager to learn and learns quickly.
