How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

The summer affords students a much needed break from the rigors of academic study. However, taking time off from intellectual engagement can often result in a loss of academic skills and knowledge gained over the course of the previous school year. This is referred to as summer learning loss, and has a significant negative impact on overall student achievement. Based on extensive research, it has been determined that this loss can occur as early as first grade, resulting in a notable learning gap between top students and those who are struggling to keep up. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent this learning deficit. The most efficient and effective is to enlist the help of a summer tutor. Varsity Tutors has experienced educational directors who will match your child with a summer tutor in Cedar Park, TX, who is knowledgeable in a host of alternative teaching methods to best teach to his or her particular learning style.

Summer Tutoring review by Grant in Cedar Park, TX
We spent our time working various types of GRE problems together from the quantitative section so that I could gauge the student's math ability and identify areas for improvement. While she favors using the calculator to ensure that she doesn't make mistakes, I am going to encourage her to have confidence in her mental math and use the calculator if it will save her time. I assigned some homework and am having her complete the math problems from the practice test in the book. We're off to a good start!

The student and I started magnetism today.  We covered the Biot-Savart/Ampere law for magnetic fields, and then studied the resulting Lorentz force law on moving charges. We also looked at inductance and applications in transformers.

I had the student do the second part of the math practice test. She did better about trying harder questions, so I gave her the assignment to go through all of the questions she missed and work them out longhand writing down all the steps. For our next session we are going to practice double checking math work.

Two spelling techniques were practiced further during this session, "word within a word" and "double vs. single consonant". While the second is self-explanatory, the first encourages spellers to search for distinguishable words that one can spell within more complex, often misspelled words. The student grasped both techniques quite well and surpassed a goal of 10 words practiced and spelled correctly by the end of the 90 minute period by 5 words!    Furthermore, pacing, order of arguments, and the use of argumentative and persuasive language and transitions were discussed and applied to his essay. The student reasoned that in most persuasive essays, the strongest argument should go at the end and likewise critiqued and applied the lesson to his own essay when appropriate.

Summer Tutoring review by Brianna in Cedar Park, TX
The student and I started tutoring on Thursday, and chatted about her previous scores. Her last exam score was a 19. She struggled with time during the reading and science sections. When I timed her for a reading evaluation, she stopped the clock after three minutes and said she wasn't taking any of the information in. We started over on another passage, reading the questions first and marking important ideas in the passage, and she did much better. She wasn't able to complete the questions in the allotted time, but most of what she completed was correct. In math, she is really struggling with algebra. Her geometry is fairly strong, but she doesn't have any of the important algebraic equations memorized. I gave her 15 flashcards with different formulas: area of a circle, circumference, perimeter, etc. to memorize asap. I assigned about four hours of homework and we will meet next Wednesday.
