Summer Tutoring review by Sarah in Calumet City, IL
We spent the whole time working on the student's science fair project. We talked about the experimental method, practiced coming up with questions and hypotheses, and went through each part of the project to make sure she understood what she was doing and why. For next time, her assignment is to explain to everyone in her family what the steps are in her experiment and why she is doing them, as well as draw before/expected/after illustrations of her experiment. The first thing she said when we met was that she loved doing homework, and it is clear that she is very curious, so I am excited to work with her!

Summer Tutoring review by Simranjit in Calumet City, IL
Today the student and I worked on his math homework and a practice ELA passage. His math work consisted mostly of a review of multiplication and some division. The student does well with multiplication for the most part, but does tend to take a long time when multiplying some numbers, for example for 6x8 he spends a while adding 8 six times or adding 6 eight times, and more than once he's made a mistake in this process. I've suggested he practice his multiplication tables 10-15 minutes every day using flashcards that he has at home. As for the ELA, he does a good job of reading and understanding most of the passage, but when it comes to answering the questions about the passage he has a tendency to rush through them, sometimes making mistakes in this process. Going forward we will add more ELA practice, with an emphasis on slowing down on the questions and referring back to the passage, and for math we will continue to review multiplication, division, and fractions.

Summer Tutoring review by Andrea in Calumet City, IL
The student had another great day at school. He completed all of his classwork without talking. We finished a few of his homework assignments early, including some spelling homework. We also worked from his personal workbook on adverbs and we discussed articles. We read from a reading comprehension passage and discussed how to find the best answer for a comprehension question. In math, we worked more on multiplication with decimals converting between different units of measurement. The student did a great job with this. I think he has a real knack for it.

We continued going over grammar. I had more exercises for the student to practice. We also went over the definitions of a noun, pronoun, verb, preposition, adjective, and adverb. We moved on to Math and worked on multiplying decimals.

Summer Tutoring review by Robert in Calumet City, IL
I helped the student review his social studies reading and take notes in preparation for a test next week. He worked hard for our whole session. I also met briefly with his brother. We spent our time talking about his semester final exams and discussing a study strategy, which we will begin after the break. While our time together was short, it was productive, and I am confident that he will be ready to work hard the next time we meet.

Summer Tutoring review by carly in Calumet City, IL
I met with the student today for the first time. At first, we did an icebreaker game of "2 truths and a lie" in order for him to get to know me and feel comfortable working with me. We then uploaded his essay onto the session and worked on editing it. He had a lot of wonderful details in his essay; we worked on making sure to answer the question of "his opinion about his favorite topic." I helped him to understand why we have to give examples of his favorite topic in order for the reader to understand. After we were finished with his essay, I put other topic statements up to practice opinion writing. I modeled the important parts of opinion writing. We played a game to make sure he understood what we learned about today. After the session was over, I emailed his mom the corrections we made with his essay.
