Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Carol in Baytown, TX
Began session with a review of the Letter C, number 3, and shapes- circle, triangle, square, and rectangle. I had him practice handwriting the letter C and numbers 1-9 and then number 3. I wrote a large Letter C and had him fill it in with orange bingo marker and he made a carrot. Then wrote large 3 and filled in with stickers. We played with sugar to make letters and numbers in sugar. We then played with cornstarch and water for sensory play. Then to review letters A, B, and C I had him sort cut out letters according to their corresponding letters.

Summer Tutoring review by Erik in Baytown, TX
We worked the first hour on his essay on biodiversity and extinction. The student was cooperative with working on sentence structure, style, and word choice. He has a good sense of how to construct sentences and paragraphs when he reads them back to himself, but when he does not, he makes many mistakes. We worked mostly on eliminating unnecessary words and simplifying awkward turns of phrase. After this, we worked on bar graphs and extrapolating information from bar graphs. He did this well.

Summer Tutoring review by Hamid in Baytown, TX
We focused on a geometry quiz the student just had. He understood all the concepts with ease. I also gave him more examples to repeatedly practice with. He now understands the difference between scaling and converting but needs to keep working out extra examples. Next week, we are going to start building a scaled model of his piano so this should solidify the concepts.

Summer Tutoring review by Isadora in Baytown, TX
Today we practiced math and reading. In math, the student had two pages of addition and subtraction problems. I hope to practice more of that with her on Wednesday. Her reading and comprehension was excellent though, she's very good at it and seems to understand the books she gets from school.

Summer Tutoring review by Margaret in Baytown, TX
The student and I focused on math and reading this week. Her math homework focused on subtracting multiples of ten and on evens and odds. She knows how to subtract and add multiples of ten. We talked about working through all the steps fully before deciding on an answer. For evens and odds, we talked about two ways to make pairs out of unequal groups - in one problem she drew a picture of eleven boys and thirteen girls and then circled pairs; in the second she added seventeen and thirteen together to find out the total number of people and whether that total was even or odd. For reading, she choose a "Captain Underpants" book that she has not read before. First, I asked her to tell me what "Captain Underpants" is about - she told me who Captain Underpants is, and how he came to be Captain Underpants. When she is interested in a book, she has good recall of important information. She was able to read the vast majority of the words in the book, and was able to sound out the unfamiliar words without assistance. She is also aware when she misreads a word, and will go back to correct it.

Summer Tutoring review by Brea in Baytown, TX
Today we went over the student's new phonics words. She wrote them out three times each and can say all of them. She then wrote sentences with five of the words. We went over word problems in math. She would read the problem, underline what she knows and circle what she needed to find. Then she would solve the problem. She has a good understanding of word problems. I then had her solve some subtraction. She did very well and got all of the problems correct. Lastly we went over her spelling words. She first said each word and then wrote each word out three times. I then gave her a spelling test. She got all of them right except "turkey" and "should."
