Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Carol in Batavia, IL
Began session by having the student blow bubbles to review the letter B sound. I had him blow in the soapy water with a straw and we made a lot of bubbles. He really seemed to enjoy this activity. Then we practiced writing the letter B and number 2 using shaving cream. Then we made a bear out of the letter B. We cut out 2 of everything - 2 eyes, 2 hands, 2 feet, and 2 ears. We focused on the circle shape. Then I wrote a large B on construction paper and he glued buttons in the B.

Potential final session on MLO exam. Discussed possibility of spending more time together (likely meeting every other week). Prepared a draft study schedule for completion of study by September 1st. Finally, reviewed calculations of housing ratios and debt ratios. Discussed role of dimensional analysis and conversion factors in proper calculations.

Summer Tutoring review by Jessica in Batavia, IL
The student and I worked on reading and math during this session. She had "homework" of reading one chapter in her book and to be able to explain what happened. She was very enthusiastic and proud that she was able to! She read another chapter in her book aloud and we discussed what had happened. She is better able to recall the story but has trouble with longer chapters. I explained what foreshadowing was and how it is used in stories. Using an example from the book she predicted what was going to happen. Her reading is greatly improving! During the math portion of the session we counted money and time. Using actual coins the student is able to identify and successfully come to the correct amount. There was a little confusion when I asked her to use less coins to come to the same amount but she caught on very quickly after explaining (ex. using 5 dimes + 1 penny=51 cents vs. using 2 quarters + 1 penny). But once this was realized she was able to use any amount to find the answer. We then added different amounts together as though she was a store. Once again once she realized to add the amounts together before counting the money she was able to come to the correct amount quickly! She had a lot of fun counting the coins and coming to right answer! She is able to identify and correctly count time on the hour. Lastly she read short stories aloud and answered questions. She is able to comprehend the short stories (1/2 page) and answer the questions correctly from memory. But with longer stories she has some trouble remembering facts. She knows to go back and look for the answer. Her reading had really improved over time and she is so enthusiastic to learn!

Summer Tutoring review by Michael in Batavia, IL
The student was prepared with her homework assignments today. We started with a Math worksheet on Pythagorean Theorem in the XY Coordinate Plane. The student needed to review how to simplify radicals and also think about side lengths using addition and subtraction. Then I helped the student with her Social Studies worksheet questions in response to a reading on the Cold War. I prompted the student to underline the evidence for her answers in the text whenever possible. Finally, we finished a Language Arts vocabulary review worksheet. I helped the student find a better definition of "premonition", in order to properly answer the relevant questions.

Summer Tutoring review by Tessa in Batavia, IL
Today we went over finding the x and y intercept and how to check work. The student did well with practice problems and had no difficulties when not using a calculator. For reading comprehension we spent a majority of time discussing foreshadowing. The student did well at recognizing key words as the author repeated them throughout the passage for emphasis. He is also doing better with metaphor and recognizing the use it was serving in foreshadowing.

Today, we did some extra chapter 9 study for the student's math test. We focused on practice problems throughout the book on the other sections of the chapter that would be tested.
