How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

As we get closer to the end of summer, it's not too late to think about summer tutoring for your child. Varsity Tutors' educational directors may assist students in connecting with a tutor in Albuquerque, NM, who may try to help your child to understand the concepts of summer. Many students lose two to three months of reading growth over the summer. Over time, this learning loss might lead to a two- to three-year learning deficit. Without summer tutoring, it may take your student up to six weeks in the fall to relearn material.

Whether your child is in kindergarten or sixth grade, combatting summer learning loss may help to set your child on the path for success in the upcoming school year. Students as young as first grade may exhibit summer learning loss. To connect with summer tutors in Albuquerque, call the educational directors at Varsity Tutors. We may match a tutor to meet your child's specific needs. Your tutor may meet your student at times convenient to your schedule. They may have sessions in your home, the local library, or via an online live interactive learning platform. Your tutor may assess your child's strengths and weaknesses to focus on specific skills. They may develop a plan to maximize each tutoring session. It is recommended that two to three hours per week of study are needed to prevent any learning loss.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Maya in Albuquerque, NM
Today, we worked on the effects of urbanization on poverty. We looked at some articles together reviewed a major question about the issue - does urbanization displace poverty and create new problems (slums, etc.), or does it provide for more economic opportunities that help both urban and rural residents? The student did great on his last note sheets, and the major comment was to include on the page why the source would be useful to him. We worked on establishing some questions that might be useful to know the answers to help write the paper. We found lots of potentially useful articles online.

Summer Tutoring review by Brandon in Albuquerque, NM
Tonight I worked with the student on identifying and reading through possible sources for his History essay. After further weighing our options for his topic choice, we were able to locate several excellent sources that will allow him to gain an understanding of the basic history and key themes needed for this essay. We went through each source and discussed how it could be used so that he could start on his annotated bibliography. We then agreed that the student would read through his sources and write his topic paragraph, which he would try to send to me by Wednesday evening. We are scheduled to meet again next Tuesday to start the next stage of his essay.

Summer Tutoring review by William in Albuquerque, NM
This was one of the best sessions that I have had with the student, and we had several major breakthroughs. He was social, communicative, and focused throughout our meeting. At the end of our session, it seemed like he wanted to continue and get even more accomplished! It is now routine that he is prepared and ready to start work each morning when I arrive. He also needs less prompting to get work started. Today he was able to make an excellent choice about which of several assignments to work on, and his decision to keep on with algebra makes sense as he is clearly gaining some momentum in this area. In the last week, he has submitted a total of three algebra assignments, receiving a grade of 93% (after an initial grade of 68%) on one of these. Grades for the other assignments most recently submitted are pending. Today he worked on Module One Test, Part II, which he completed within our session. I had contacted his English teacher for clarification about one of the long overdue assignments, and I shared the response I received with the student. His reaction was, overall, quite positive, and we began working on that assignment together this morning. We have all noticed that some of the written assignments for World History are writing intensive, and he needs some support breaking these assignments into more manageable "portions". With this in mind, I started on a question that requires discussion of Byzantine art, so that when he is ready to complete it, some of the prep work will be done. He reached a significant milestone today -- he has submitted ALL the assignments that were past due from December! I expect that with this major accomplishment, he will find additional motivation and will be more eager to complete other work. We are meeting again tomorrow as scheduled.

Summer Tutoring review by Melissa in Albuquerque, NM
All the student had to finish for homework was his document-based questions essay and some state assessment review homework for science. He worked on these and also began working on his math weekly homework. The teachers are providing numerous resources to help study for the state assessment tests. Now that we are really getting close to that, I'm glad to see that he remembers most of the concepts that he learned earlier in the school year. I'm hoping that this week with a little more practice, he will be more comfortable with how the wording can lead him to the correct answer.

Summer Tutoring review by Geoffrey in Albuquerque, NM
Today we focused on putting together the student's math binder, reviewing some of our old skills and note taking guides, and began some vocab work (an area he indicated he would like more help). He seemed to be in good spirits about our work and responded well to the vocabulary acquisition phase. For homework, the student was asked to write sentences for our new vocab words and try putting them into use every day.

Today we focused on the student's research paper in World History, and he took a World History Quiz, which he scored a 95% on! He also completed a PowerPoint presentation on Alexander the Great. He did an amazing job. Our next session will be focused on a Science Exam and some Algebra. As always, he is a true pleasure to work with.
