Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student brought a very strong draft of her essay that we discussed and tightened up for clarity and grammar. That essay is now complete! We then went over her shorter statement which was very nearly complete. We edited and adjusted, and it is now complete as well! We will have one more meeting to work on the remaining statement for. At that point, we will not meet again until she begins working through the online applications as there may be additional short answer questions there."
"The student didn't have a chance to draft her college application essays for this week's session, so instead we spent the time grafting together two other essays to complete a longer personal statement for college. She was very happy with the final product. For Saturday, I am going to print out all three of her finished essays and do a final editing run through of each."
"The student and I met tonight to help him work on outlines and rough drafts of his application essays for college. We outlined and drafted a personal statement, and outlined three other essay-response questions as well."
"Reviewed essays before meeting with client. Made suggestions for revision. Met with client to continue editing/revision/development. Developed outline for continued revision. Set appointment for second meeting on 9/28 - 2 hours."
"Today was my fourth session with the student. We continued to work on his college essay, which by the end of the session was showing strong signs of being completed soon. Since our last meeting, the student played around a bit with finding other themes that would tie the whole document together. Some worked. Others did not. We decided that he should highlight his inspiration for the topic of the essay -- debate -- which was a film called the Great Debaters. The goal now is to continually reference that initial spark as he progresses through the narrative. In particular, we worked hard on the final two body paragraphs of the essay, which lengthened one and combined two others. It is all wrapping up nicely. For next time, I asked the student to work on writing a conclusion paragraph and in keeping the content he has already created the way it is, the better to get to a final piece of work by next Wednesday. That is our goal. We agreed to meet again at 2:30pm on Monday."
"The student completed several essays for various universities. We created a personal statement essay that would work for several different university prompts, then the student made changes to tailor it to individual universities."
"The student sent me her two papers that needed review; I read both over and made edits and suggestions. I edited for grammar, clarity and citation. I also made organizational suggestions where relevant."
"We cut down his common app personal essay and incorporated a more active voice into it. We also worked on the supplemental essays and brainstormed about his background and influences that have affected his goals. He should continue working on these essays and I will see him after I get back!"
"We went over the essays that the student had written for his college applications in addition to going over more information regarding his college application. We have set up to meet again throughout the month in order to have his applications ready for submission by November 1st."
"We went over the requirements for his essay that he needs to write for a graduate masters program at a university in Europe. He has some progress on the essay. We developed an outline for him to use to create the essay and will be meeting next week to make grammatical corrections and revamp issues with flow. I have no concerns that he will be able to construct an essay based on the outline that will function as a good foundation to make revisions on."
"I worked with the student on her common application essay as well as her short essay. Primarily we worked on organization and structure for her essays. I worked with the student on goal setting, strategies for working through time management, and the SQ3R method for approaching his AP History readings."
"Fine tuned essay for submission to the university and submitted completed application with attached essay. The student is to look at editing down this essay further for submission to other schools."
